Ovi Store Updated to v1.05(611)

Posted by Isaac Wong Sunday, February 7, 2010 0 comments

Continuing the good work that our friends at Espoo have been doing over the last couple of weeks, they have now updated the Ovi store. Yeah we kept reading from them and elsewhere that Ovi store is all set to get a new revamp and boy, they did deliver on the promise.
So what’s the update all about? Honestly we think, this is the best iteration of Ovi store we have seen from Nokia. Looks like the folks at Nokia took a long look at the list of complaints reviewers and users kept throwing at them and finally took the time to iron them out before churning out their update for their app store. After all they are competing with iTunes App store and lest we sound raucous, we think the Ovi Store is ready for a head-on fight with Apple’s iTunes App store. Read more »

Chess Pro II as the name suggests is a Chess board game that you can play on your Nokia 5800. The game has a feature rich design with a customizable user interface. You can choose between a number of designs for your pieces. You can even change the screen layout and boards to different shades of color. If you are an expert player and understand the movement notations then you can change your view mode which allows you see the corresponding notations of all of your game moves. This game allows you to enjoy your play with the computer as well as your friends. You can switch on your Bluetooth and set the game to listen for new users in the preferences and play via Bluetooth with your friend. You can even play the game with your friend via SMS, you simply create a new human user and select it from your contacts.

You have a number of AI (Artificial Intelligence) users already created in the game with different proficiency levels (Expert/Intermediate/Beginner). Playing with the AI users is just amazing and you can spend hours playing this game. The very first game i played on my mobile i spent an hour because it is really addictive when you don't wanna lose and play till your very last piece is gone. Speaking about the stability of the game and resource consumption, it is designed for Nokia 5800 and runs smoothly and never gets your phone stuck.

Nokia 5800 App Review: Latest Fring – Now with video call

Posted by Isaac Wong Tuesday, February 2, 2010 0 comments

Fring is a mobile chat client which i believe everyone of us are aware of. We know about the capabilities that Fring adds to your mobile phone when it comes to communicating over a number of IM services. We can interact on Gtalk, Skype, Yahoo, Aim, MSN, ICQ, Twitter and Facebook with Fring using WiFi or the data connection. The latest version of Fring brings Video Calling over Fring/Skype which is amazing and Fring claims itself to be the only such application providing such a service.

To use the video calling service all that you need to do is just search for the Fring/Skype contact on Fring and choose Video Call from the calling options. The video call facility is available to 'Fring -> Skype' and 'Fring -> Fring' calls. I hope they bring out video calling over Yahoo, MSN and Gtalk also. So now you can video chat with your friends either from Fring or Skype on PC.

UC Browser is just another browser not really as good as the Opera Browser for the Nokia 5800 i reviewed in my last post. However, it has come long way since i last knew about it. It was buggy and unstable when i last used it. UC Browser 7 is an all new avatar of the last version i laid hands on. It is much more stable and refined, displays the webpages just like you see on your PC browser.

Browsing over this browser on Nokia 5800 was a fine experience. In terms of functionality, i would say it surpasses Opera. It has an inbuilt download manager which supports low speeds over the 2G network. The download manager allows you to save your download anywhere on the phone, something which is not available in Opera 10 Beta 2. It somehow restricts the download to the phone memory only.

We all know about Opera which happens to be the master of mobile internet browsing. I have reviewed the previous versions of Opera 4 and Opera 5 for Nokia 5800 which happened to be the J2ME versions. Opera 4 was a nice one but Opera 5 somehow was not stable on Nokia 5800. Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2 is a symbian version and works flawlessly on Nokia 5800. The entire layout and user interface which appears on Nokia 5800 gives a feel as if you are not browsing on Nokia 5800 and you are on an entirely different phone.

Skyfire 1.5 Goes Beta on 5800, Does More than Mere Browsing

Posted by Isaac Wong Monday, January 25, 2010 0 comments

skyfire-logo Yeah, Skyfire-the only other mobile browser (other than symbian and microB), capable of rendering flash content on mobile devices is now available for symbian fifth edition device, still in 1.5beta though. We have been waiting to get our hands on this browser from our 5800s since long and the dawn of 2010 has finally bought this amazing browser to our dear Tube 5800s.
So, what’s the thing with this Skyfire which made this browser win the “People’s Voice Best Mobile Application” in the 2009 Webby Awards? Well, we have already spilled the beans on this one-flash support and couple that with “blazing fast” browsing speeds and you have one gem of a browser for your mobile phones. Ok, so if it’s that good how does it fare on our 5800s? Hit the read button to find out. Read more »

The holiday season may be over but if you are still planning for some travel (work/leisure), we have something you might just need for the trip. Wondering what? Let’s say you are traveling to some exotic location, the local language of which is as alien to you as the humanoids on Pandora of James Cameroon’s Avatar, then you are in for luck as ABBYY have just released another one of their revolutionary OCR based apps for 5800s- ABBYY’ FotoTranslate.
ABBYY FotoTranslate comes in as many as 8 versions as of now offering word-by-word translation between German, Italian, Russian, and English. That covers most of the European languages and if you happen to be heading to Europe, put ABBYY FotoTranslate on your shopping list, right now! Read more »

ShareMySlides is an online live presentation service which is currently running in the Beta test phase as such it is offering free service at the moment. I found it really interesting in the sense that you can upload all your documents (Only PDF and Powerpoint currently) on their website and view it on your mobile without a supporting application. What i mean is that to view the power-point or pdf documents that you upload, you don't need a Adobe Acrobat or Quick Office application installed on your Nokia 5800 to view them. There is a ShareMySlides application that can be used to see these documents on your phone which is absolute free at this time.
