Ovi Store Client Update Available for Nokia 5800

Ovi update

Ovi update

Ovi store may be just a few days over fortnight old but the folks at Ovi thought it was time to update it! Ovi store was officially launched worldwide only on 26th May 2009 and today just 19 days after its launch there is an update available for ovi store client on Nokia 5800. Looks like the tech team at ovi store ihas been working over time first with several complaints over non functional payment and then with several applications and games not showing up in their store. Finally they have come up with an update for the ovi store and lets see how this version fares on our 5800s.

To update your client, all you need to do is just open the ovi client on your 5800s. The client will prompt for an update as indicate in the screenshot to the left. Tapping on update will open the download link in the default symbian browser. The setup file is 651 kb and it took me less that 10s for downloading the setup file. Installation will update the ovi client from v 1.05 (212) to v1.05(231) in a few seconds.

The aesthetics of the new version continues to remain the same as with the earlier version. One thing that stands out in the new version of ovi store is the number of new applications/games available for 5800. I haven’t checked ovi store for the last few days for there were no interesting additions happening but am now very much impressed by the new lineup of applications/ganes available at the store. Is it the fact that I didn’t check on ovi store for a while or is it the case of ovi update including the new set of applications/games is something only the readers of this blog can point out. However I would like to believe that the update added a new line up of games/applications to the store. I came across a bunch of games from the biggest name in gaming industry today, Electronic Arts. Check out the gallery below for some screenshots of the latest version of ovi client on Nokia 5800.

Nokia 5800 Game Review: Pacman (updated)

Scr000389Pac-man on Nokia 5800! Can you believe that? Yeah the most popular game to date is now available on our beloved 5800s. Pac-man has been quiet a phenomenon ever since its release almost three decades ago in Japan by its original developers, Namco and marketed subsequently in the US by Midway. Such is the popularity of this game, that as per Davie-Brown Index, Pac-Man has the highest brand awareness of any video game character among American consumers, recognized by 94 percent of them. It was only a matter of time before such a popular game landed in one of the most popular phones in market today, Nokia 5800. As you may know that Pac-man is not very graphic intensive, but the gameplay and its popularity make it one of the best games to sport on your 5800s

Installation

Pac-man for s60 5th edition devices can be downloaded for free from here. The installation file is just over 10kb over 200kb and installation as such is a pretty simple process. There are several versions of pac-man and the link we have provided to is the best version available for s60 5th edition devices. There are several java based pac-mans available on the web for free but these need a physical keyboard for game play and the pac-man arena as such is also pretty small in these versions..

Ovi Maps 3.0109 (Nokia Maps 3) on Nokia 5800

Posted by Isaac Wong Friday, June 12, 2009 0 comments

Today a new beta of Ovi Maps was released, Ovi Maps 3.0109 introduces many bug fixes, and most importantly for me Symbian 5th Edition support. I tried the last beta of Ovi Maps on my N96 and it was pretty good, was nice to have a sync with Ovi, the search was a bit clunky still, one problem, and a fairly fundamental one, was that it crashed in navigation mode. Which was a big issue, especially when you’re trying to navigate around Central London! So it was quickly uninstalled and I went back to Maps 2.

Now I’m rocking a Nokia 5800 I was keen to try out the new version. The update procedure was very straightforward, connect the phone to my PC, run the updater. The updater software then downloaded an upgrade, and pushed it to the phone, it then deleted the Maps 2 map data, and then downloaded new map data. Sweet!

Firing up the app for the first time, it was all looking very familiar. Having a little look around, it was looking very similar to Maps 2, but a little more polished. You can input your Ovi account details and it will synchronise your routes and favourite places, I noticed a bug here straight away, if you changed to set to an automatic sync, it instantly reverted back to ‘Manual’, I tried another setting, that then reverted back to it’s default. Nokia have some work to do here!

It is looking nice, but it still feels a bit clunky and not as intuitive as NavMii for example, but it’s getting there! Load times are quicker than ever, and it has some cute little additions such as showing the weather where you are going. I’ve yet to take it out for a drive but will do that soon! When the final product comes out keep an eye out for a full review and comparison with my current favourite, NavMii.

Check out some screen grabs :-

Nokia 5800 App Review: PSILOC World Traveller v1.01

With globalisation has come increased travelling and with increased travelling, the need for a good travel companion application on smartphones. A good travel companion can cut the workload of a frequent traveller by as much as 50%. This genre of applications is still in its infancy for the symbian 5th edition platform with only a couple of applications providing these features to symbian phones. One such application is PSILOC’s World Traveller, which was released only this June 2nd for 5800s and other s60 fifth edition devices.

Installation

The basic version of World Traveller can be downloaded for free from PSILOC’s official website here. PSILOC has a dedicated portal for its world traveller application with several screenshots and detailed documentation of the several features of the application. The installation file (.sisx) is around 1.2 MB and hence its not a good idea to download directly on to your mobile unless you are on an unlimited data plan. Download and installation is a pretty breezy process with a time span of around 40 s for the entire procedure over wi-fi.

Series 60 5th edition themes

nokia 5800 themesnokia 5800 themes

Nokia’s latest platform is S60 5th edition, made specially for touch screen devices such as the Nokia 5800 and the soon to be released Nokia N97.

Both these handsets have a screensize of 3.5″ which isn’t a standard Nokia screensize, so none of the themes made for the likes of the N95, look particularly good on the bigger screen, so it’s best to use themes created especially for 5th edition. Fortunately the theming community have welcomed the two phones with open arms and created some really beautiful and creative themes.

MMCForums has a great range of both Nokia 5800 themes and Nokia N97 themes, all free to download.

Screenshots of M1 - Android Emulator by MMMOOO

Screenshots of M1 - Android Emulator by MMMOOO

Android interface is coming to a symbian device near you! Surprised? This news is exclusive to followers of our blog as we are proud to be the first source on internet to announce that developers at MMMOOO are coming up with an Android emulator for our beloved 5800s (s60 5th edition devices) and s60 third edition mobile devices. The screenshots to the left are from a s60 third edition device but the folks at MMMOOO have assured us that the emulator aptly titled “M1“, inspired by HTC G1, will be very much functional on s60 5th edition devices. M1 will be priced at USD 6.99 and will be officially launched on June 18th this year.

Inspired by the success of MyPhone, which definitely is the hottest application for 5800 today, MMMOOO has come up with this fully functional android emulator-M1. As with MyPhone, M1 is just an application launcher for s60 devices. M1 brings in features of android interface like: transition from standby menu to main menu with a drag icon, option of adding unlimited 3rd part icons in the applications menu and an independant application displaying SMSs in iPhone style conversation window (only for the s60 fifth edition devices).

It can be seen from the screenshots above that screen lock, drag to main main menu and sideways drag to the second screen are functional. It can be assumed that as with android interface, M1 will also support three screens and the screen transitions will be as smooth as with MyPhone application if not any better. So be ready to get a feel of Android on your 5800s, come this June 18th.

P.S- We will be giving out MyPhone Exceeding iPhone licenses at a special promotional price to our readers soon. More details on this in the next post. Till then check out screenshots of the Android emulator-M1 for s60 devices.\

Surprised? Yeah! Even I was when I heard those words on youtube. Neuvex, yeah the same guys who bought multi-touch like application, “Neuboard Touch“, an Image manipulation engine to Nokia 5800s have now come up with this amazing application to switch on/off your electrical appliances. Titled “NeuRoom”, this is a 6th project under Neu Series by Sittiphol Phanvilai Neuvex. Check out the video below to see the application in action:

Looks like it takes more than an application to implement this in our homes. We will also need the control box, which brings bluetooth connectivity to our electrical appliances, which can then interact with our 5800s using this application. The application definitely has a very high “wow” potential but what remains to be seen is the cost of implementation of this project in our rooms. Nevertheless, its great work and hats off to Sittiphol Phanvilai Neuvex for his yet another cool application on the symbian platform.

P.S- Please note that this application is still in development stage and no word yet on when it will be released to public
