Nokia 5800 App Review: Timer
S60 never had a stopwatch counter. (Maybe Nokia 5500 had one… I can’t remember.) And this is something that someone like me, a common mortal can’t understand.
Fortunately, there’s always somebody who develops the code and application and shares with everybody else.
That’s what Offscreen Technologies did!
This is as simple as it gets. You get 4 buttons oddly placed in the screen and if you tap them you’ll get an “about”, a “start”, a “close” and a “lap” function.
It does what you expect from a stopwatch, but design wise it could be much better. For starters, it doesn’t include landscape mode (which you may think should be mandatory) and as said above, the buttons look like they have been placed there as they could have been places elsewhere.
With timer you can naturally register your lap values. However, you can’t have more than 4 laps at the same time which, considering the big screen of the 5800, is simply screen space going to waste.
In the end this will work if you need to know how long does it take to run along a track, or if you want to know how fast you can tap “start/stop” (that’s funny too). Don’t expect the best of designs and there’s no countdown functionality. This would be an extra value for this application, but unfortunately you don’t get that, at least on this release.
But in the end it’s still worth to have it on your phone, especially because I don’t know of any other application that does this particular job!
