Maybe it slipped passed you but Nokia just recently updated the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic’s firmware to version 31.0.101. This has been a long time coming since it’s last firmware update dated July 2009.
Currently only available in Europe and Asia, this newest firmware update has included updates on your phone including an advanced e-mail application, a better version of Ovi Maps 3.0, an easier navigation experience, and bug fixes.
Frankly, there aren’t much graphical changes on this update unlike the previous update. It is claimed that there are bug fixes done which should always be part of any firmware update. Now to which bug fixes were resolved, Nokia did not specify it.
Also, it was mentioned that there is a more advanced e-mail application and Ovi Maps 3.0. Upon checking Ovi Maps, the interface does look cleaner and has great looking icons.
This is not the update everyone is waiting for. For months, Nokia 5800 users have been teased with the kinetic scrolling found in other Nokia units, which should have been part of the normal features of the Nokia 5800. Until now, we have not seen any trace of this kind on the updates.
Another feature we are waiting for is the appearance of widgets on the Nokia 5800’s main display, which is similar to the upcoming Nokia N900 phone due November 2009. What these widgets will do is similar to desktop widgets in Windows or Mac OS X. They will display different information such as time, dates and RSS feeds. However, with the 81MB internal memory of the Nokia 5800, this may be hard to pull. Having widgets present will eat up memory space and will affect the performance of your phone.
We are still in a wait and see mode. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Nokia didn’t forget one of their most sought after devices.
