5800 vs 5530

Posted by Isaac Wong Saturday, September 19, 2009 0 comments

Nokia 5800 vs 5330 18 September 2009 – The Nokia 5530 is seen as the succeeding model to the 5800. In short, the 5530 is a slimmed down version of the 5800.

The key difference between both devices is that the 5530 does not come with the HSDPA / WCDMA 3.5G technologies which are found in the 5800. Almost all the other features are the same so it will come down to a decision of whether one wants a 3.5G phone or a non-3G phone. The difference is about 10% of the retail price.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (codenamed Tube) (RM 1050 - 1080)
3.5G HSDPA + WiFi 802.11 b/g, Touchscreen Candybar, 3.2 MP Camera, 81 MB Memory + microSD

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is amongst the first devices to support Comes With Music, Nokia's groundbreaking service which offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalogue.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a S60 5th Edition device with a resistive touch screen and tactile feedback. The device has variety of input methods: stylus, plectrum and finger touch support for text input and UI control (alphanumeric keypad, full and mini qwerty keyboard, handwriting recognition). It supports WLAN or HSDPA (3.5G). Supported WCDMA frequencies depend on the region where the device is available. Find directions and locations with the integrated A-GPS and included maps.

According to Wikipedia, a prototype of this handset was seen in the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight, Christina Aguilera's "Keeps Gettin' Better" as well as the #1 hit "Womanizer" by Britney Spears. The handset was also seen in Flo Rida's "Right Round", The Pussycat Dolls' "Jai Ho!" and Hush Hush and Katy Perry's "Waking Up In Vegas" music videos.

Doesn’t it get boring to be listening to the same old ringtones that came in pre-loaded on your 5800s. With 5800s selling in bucket loads, we like to differentiate ours with that premium ringtone to set our 5800s apart from the crowd.

While there are tons of them available on the web, finding that perfect ringtone continues to be a frustrating task. To make things easier for our readers, we have scouted the web and compiled a few sets of ringtones to appeal to different genres of our readers. More details after the break. Read more »

Managing Music on your 5800 can be a big headache especially if you don’t have a tagged music collection to start with. Add to that the album art incompatibility and absence of the option of tagging the files directly from our 5800s, there is a dire need for an app that can help us organise and manage our music collection on our Xpressmusic 5800s.

While Shazam, is an excellent application to tag music, its feature set is largely limited to just tagging and linking to the tracks in Nokia’s Music store. Midomi is another competing service, which offers value added features like: sharing a song on Twitter or Facebook, links to lyrics, videos, and artist info for free. With a high resolution 3.2″ screen of our 5800s, it was only a matter of time before some developer ported the comics to the vibrant touchscreens of 5800s. Thanks to Carnival Comics, the first comics has finally arrived on the symbian stage.

Scr000301

I must say the guys at Opera are really doing a great job. I am really impressed by the latest version of Opera Mini. All the gaps that most of the mobile manufacturing companies are not able to fill in terms of quality software features, the job is being done by companies like Opera.

The latest version of Opera Mini is a masterpiece in its total potential and presentation. Kinetic Scrolling is one of major drawbacks of Nokia 5800. Opera Mini 5 has kinetic scrolling of the web pages. You can double click on the screen to maximize it. Opera Mini 5 has a tool panel at the bottom of the screen which makes alot easier to browse on your mobile. The entire UI has been redesigned. There are speeddials on the start page of the application and you can assign different sites with their thumbnails to the speeddials.

Scr000222Zum Zum is a simple yet attractive arcade game which has an egyptian backdrop in the way the menu options and the entire screen has been designed. If you have played those bubble arcade games, you will find a lot of similarity in the way the whole gaming logic works here. Here, you find a series of multi-coloured balls racing from one hole to the other in a spiral path. You have to shoot a matching coloured ball in the collection of running balls in such a way that it hits the same colour adjacent balls (minimum 2 in number). The combination of three or more same colour balls result in a collapse thus reducing the length of the running ball collection thus preventing it from reaching the other hole. If the running ball reaches the other hole, your game is over.

Nokia App: Friendster

Posted by Isaac Wong 0 comments

The world of social media has taken the Internet by storm. It has become a phenomenon that has brought old friends together and new friends meet for the first time. One of these social networks is Friendster and they have brought their flavor of social networking at the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone via the Free Friendster application.

Your Friendster on the Nokia 5800.

The Application

The Friendster application basically brought almost all the features of the desktop version to the Nokia 5800 phone. As you know, Friendster has been one of the pioneers of the social network industry and it knows what to add in their application.

Upon launching the application, you are met with the Friendster log-in page. Be sure that you already have an account with Friendster before using this application. Once you’re logged in, you are shown a simple interface. At the top of the page, you can find the Friendster logo. Then there is a roster of buttons, which the application hopes we will be using more often. These are namely the Home, My Profile, Friends and Album. At the bottom of the buttons roster will be your profile photo and the status you have typed in Friendster. This is similar to the Facebook status. It gives you an indication of how many people have viewed your profile and the comments that your friends have placed.

When you scroll down, you can read the recent comments your friends have made about you. This can range from ordinary text to html embedded messages. If you click the “Album” button, you will be transported to your online photos. Want to check our all your friends in the network, click the “Friends” button at the top of the page.

My take on the Friendster Application

The Friendster application basically mimics the features and design of the online desktop version. The clean white and blue color scheme is used in basically all elements on the screen – buttons, text and icons. I say “Kudos” to the programmers for bringing familiarity to the interface. First time users will not have a hard time using the application.

Loading time is fine except when the built-in Nokia 5800 Internet browser does not recognize certain html codes. If the comments are graphics intensive, expect some slowness in loading especially if you have a poor Internet connection.

My verdict

I can say that the Friendster application is a very good replica of the online desktop version. It faces tough competition with the several social network applications such as the Faceboook app. But it can roll with the punches.

Of course, if you are an avid Friendster user, this app is for you. If not, then this is also a good way to explore the world of Friendster.

The Friendster application for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone can be downloaded for FREE here. If you wish to donate to the author, go right ahead. Just register to access the site. You can also download this application straight to your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone by installing the Ovi Store Application.
