Nokia 5800 Reaches 20% Market Share

Free Image Hosting | ImageDOS

A Finnish publisher has reported that Nokia 5800 XpressMusic owns 20% of worldwide smartphone market. The estimation is like what Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has said. That result is mentioned just for Q1 2009 result. The result will be a good start for S60 5th device.

That good result is better than expected and it may become the Nokia device with best achievement ever.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was launched in Q4 last year. In a short time after, a huge number of customers worldwide were continually attracted to the phone. Just only in 1st two months after launching the manufacture claimed that the phone was sold more than a million unit per month.

30 April 2009 – Nokia and América Móvil, through its Telcel subsidiary, today announced they will be offering the breakthrough 5800 Comes With Music concept to the Mexican market. The 5800 Comes With Music is the industry's most comprehensive, powerful and exciting digital music offer, combining the Comes With Music service and the highly innovative Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia's first touch-screen device.

5800 Comes With Music will be commercially available on May 1st through Telcel, the leading wireless services provider in México. Consumers getting the solution either through Telcel's Authorized Customer Centers or through its Authorized Distributors, will be able to take advantage of the largest voice and data network coverage in the country, plus best prices and value added services in the market. It will also be available at Nokia's flagship store located at the Antara Shopping Mall and Nokia's Online Store www.nokia.com.mx/shop.

The Nokia 5800 Comes With Music service offers consumers a new way of discovering and enjoying music from the mobile device or PC. Consumers accessing Comes with Music through their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device will be able to navigate and enjoy a wide-ranging music catalog of tracks from local and international artists for a year without worrying about track cost and without experiencing access restrictions to millions of tracks available from Nokia Music Store, the new digital music store in Mexico. In addition, they will be able to keep their music on the mobile device or PC once the subscription is over. This service revolutionizes the digital music experience known thus far.

"The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has already sold 3 million devices worldwide, now Mexican consumers will be able to get hold of the 5800 Comes With Music," said Francisco Lorenzo, Nokia Mexico Director. "Users can simply find and discover all the music they want, without worrying about the price of each album or track. Simplicity and freedom of use are two of the leading features of this service, but most revolutionary of all is that users get to keep all their favorite music in their PC or Nokia device without worrying about the cost of each track," he said.

This breakthrough concept succeeded in uniting all known music labels, including EMI, Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, among others, in addition to independent music companies and other music agents.

"Today's needs for communication are greater, that's why Telcel is always looking at offering the best devices like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, a phone that will provide our users with a new way of experiencing the music in a mobile phone", said Patricia Hevia, Operations Director of Telcel's Region 9. "The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic takes advantage of Telcel's 3G network, which today covers 149 cities and thousands of villages", she continued.

Telcel, aiming to foster the use of mobile Internet, and with the introduction of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic to the Mexican market, offers competitive rates, appropriate to its users. This way, it promotes and facilitates the mobile experience, while users can rely on access to affordable prices and services, and benefit to the max from 3G technology applications through Telcel's Unlimited Data Plan backing up the great features that 5800 XpressMusic offers to consumers.

Beware: Your Nokia 5800 Maybe Defective

If you were keen to lay your hands on Nokia's much-awaited 5800 XpressMusic soon, wait until you read this.

Apparently, Russian tech website Mobile-Review, and with it, Nokia has confirmed that nearly ALL 5800 XpressMusic devices manufactured before February come with defective speakers and that it WILL go defective sooner or later.

How can they be so sure? Well people over at the site (Mobile-Review) actually bought 10 sparkling new 5800s produced before February, disassembled them into pieces and checked each of them individually! They even checked the speakers under an electron microscope! Moreover, during these times of economic downturn, they actually spent a whopping $4500 in the process.

Nokia has since then acknowledged the existence of the problem and has released a statement saying that the issue has been sorted now. The release from Nokia's Eurasia PR head says that the vendor from whom the speakers were sourced has been changed. Now, the funny thing about this is that had you faced any issues with your speakers and had got them replaced from a service center, it is very likely that the new speakers too would exhibit problems - because it came from the same supplier. It is only in the last week of January that the service centers received fresh stock of unaffected, problem-free speakers sourced from another vendor. Therefore, if you had been to the service center for a speaker change before this happened, there is a possibility of you landing up there once again.

There has been no official announcement or next plan of action by Nokia yet. We are also unsure about the reach of the problem and as to how deep this has spread. With over a million 5800 XpressMusic phones shipped prior to January 23, Nokia might have a big problem to deal with. Nokia might announce as to which markets have been affected by this problem and how it plans to fix issues with the handsets shipped with the defective hardware.

As of now, we have no confirmation if the shipments to India have been affected as well. We do expect Nokia to come up with a clarification very soon. Meanwhile, you might as well stall your plans to get a new 5800 for the moment till the air clears up. It still is a good phone, mind you and Nokia has acted very quickly to stop the issue from spreading further! Watch this space for more updates!

We did contact Nokia in order to get an official response and are awaiting a reply to our query.

S60 Widget development made simple

Published by Richard Bloor at 23:43 BST, April 30th 2009

The next version of Nokia’s tool for S60 widget development is currently in beta testing. In ‘A First Look at Nokia WRT Plug-in for Aptana Studio 2.0’ I’ve been given the opportunity to preview the new features and find a considerably richer tool, offering support for all the current and forthcoming S60 widget features.

‘Overall, 2.0 is a good step forward in supporting widget developers with a comprehensive set of tools’, find out why.

Published by Steve Litchfield at 9:41 BST, April 29th 2009

One of the biggest developers for UIQ, DreamSpring, has followed up its commitment to porting its software to S60 with the announcement of DreamConnect. Think of this as a contact manager on steroids, with with an 'innovative business card layout', plus 'hierarchical categories that let you organise your contacts to accurately reflect your real life relationships'. Sounds interesting - hopefully, given the UIQ heritage, there's a touch version coming for S60 5th Edition.

The Nokia 5800 already supports multitouch, sort of...

The Nokia 5800 is criticised by some for being a single-touch device that can only register one finger press at a time. But is this actually true? Not quite. With a bit of clever interface design the existing 5800 hardware is already capable of registering two simultaneous screenpresses at once, and you can see how this works in the full story below (you can even try it for yourself, and there's a video of a 5800 game using it). The reason this is worth mentioning is that Nokia is already using a more limited version of this method in their just-released Maemo 5 SDK, which is the latest version of the platform they use on their internet tablets. If Nokia's already using it there, it seems very likely they could use it on their S60 devices too.

How multitouch on the 5800 can work

This example might seem pointless because it doesn't do anything useful, but that's because the QWERTY keyboard hasn't been designed with multitouch in mind. Apps designed for multitouch would use it properly and do stuff that is useful.

The purpose of this example is just to de monstrate how the 5800 detects keypresses, so you can see how multitouch could work.

The beauty of this example is that you can try it out yourself on your own 5800. Just start an application that uses text entry and select the full screen QWERTY keyboard. Now, do the following...

Hold down Q, and the Q button lights up:

Q on Nokia 5800

Hold down P, and the P button lights up:

P on Nokia 5800

Now, hold down P and Q simultaneously, and the button directly between your touches lights up (either R or T, depending on exactly how you're pressing Q and P):

T on Nokia 5800

All you need to do to have a simple multitouch interface on existing 5800 hardware is interpret touches exactly between two controls as simultaneous presses of both controls.

You might be thinking that this is silly because people could activate multitouch by accident if they do a single touch between two controls. However, there are ways to avoid this problem.

You could then tell the device to only record multitouch when another button is already active. This means that if someone touches the screen between two controls it won't activate multitouch by accident, because no other button was active at the time the touch happened. In theory this would prevent multitouch working with two truly simultaneous touches, but you would very very rarely put both fingers onto two parts of a screen at exactly the same time, it's far more likely that you would touch one part first and then another part. Also, application interfaces could be designed to discourage truly simultaneous touches.

You could also design apps in such a way that there's no point in touching the area between them, for example a racing game could have all the controls at the sides of the screen with the middle used for displaying the race itself.

The benefit of this technique is that it requires no extra hardware, and it could work with even the cheapest touchscreen devices, though it may require more careful planning of where on-screen controls go. This is old news really, many developers are already using this method, but most people don't seem to realise that this is possible.

This isn't as flexible as "true" multitouch, as it wouldn't be directly recording the true position of the two touches, but that probably doesn't matter much because the user wouldn't have to ever know how it works. Clever and careful design of app interfaces can make this method function in a way that is virtually indistinguishable from traditional multitouch.

The extra care needed for interface design may make life more difficult for app developers, but the much wider range of devices they could reach would provide them with far greater sales potential. Very few devices do support true multitouch, so any technique which allows multitouch on all touchscreen devices is potentially very valuable indeed. It would also make simultaneous development for multiple touch-based platforms much easier.

Nokia are already using this method in the recently-released Maemo 5 SDK using the name "two-touch", where you hold down your finger on one part of the screen while touching elsewhere in order to activate a status menu: the interface would be registering two simultaneous touches, which is multitouch (of a kind, at least). Nokia could just as easily implement this technique on future S60 touch interfaces, and app developers can already use this technique for 5800 games and applications right now if they want to.

UPDATE: AAS reader Micky! has alerted us to a video of a game that uses this technique on the 5800:

Steve's take/thoughts:

There's more though. As I indicated a few months ago, the timing of the keypresses and their 'release' could also be used. Extending the thoughts above, I can see how the user might:

  1. press and hold the screen at 'q'
  2. 0.2 secs later, press and hold the screen at 'w'
  3. 0.2 secs later again, release the screen at 'q'
  4. finally, release the screen at 'w'

There's more than enough information here for the touchscreen driver to pass on coordinates as appropriate, effectively giving multi-touch (more like 'dual touch', since handling three spots at once might get too hairy!) on a non-multi-touch, resistive virtual keyboard. In this case processing the text input "qw", even though both letters were held down at the same time for a while.

Written By Samrat| 14 February 2009|

Here are some of the applications that I had installed recently on my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Mobile. I installed WinRAR, Google Maps, Windows Live Messenger and some others.

WinRAR is useful to open RAR and ZIP files directly on your mobile.
Google maps can be used to find new locations and others things easily.
Windows Live Messenger will help you to chat with your friends from your mobile.

WinRAR for Nokia 5800 and N97

WinRAR is a simple application for your Nokia S60 5th edition mobiles like 5800 or N97, which can be used to open .rar and .zip files in your mobile. WinRAR for mobile will be very useful when you need to open a zipped attachment that you have got in an email. This will also be useful when you need to unzip some themes or applications directly on your mobile. WinRAR reads ZIP & RAR archives, you can extract the files from existing archives or you can create new archives. I installed it on my Nokia 5800 and it works fine.

Google Maps for Nokia S60 5th Edition Mobiles

google-maps-for-nokia-s60-5th-edition-mobiles

Google maps for Mobile is one of the application which I found to be very useful. The latest upgraded version works pretty good for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. You can utilize the touch screen capability of your Nokia 5800 to view the streets on the large screen. It’s really a good experience when you move around the locations by using the touch screen. The Google Maps with Street Views looks very good. You can also visit http://www.google.com/gmm from your mobile to download the application.

Features of Google Maps

  • You can see your location on a map, even if you do not have a GPS.
  • Search for any business listings, hotels, coffee shops etc.
  • You can easily get your driving directions.
  • Get routes and schedules to travel via subway, bus, or on foot.
  • View street-level imagery of businesses and turns in directions.
  • Real-time traffic helps you find the fastest route.

Hot Deal: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM For $306!

Hot Deal: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM For $306!

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is oddly becoming one of my new favorite phones, as it’s becoming more and more fun to use as more applications become available. The phone is $399 if you buy it directly from Nokia, but today, Amazon dropped the price to a rock-bottom $306! That’s nearly $100 less, and I can confirm that it still comes with a $50 gift certificate to Amazon’s Unbox video on demand service!!

You can purchase it straight from Amazon, and right now, there’s free shipping, too! Keep in mind this is the NAM variant, which has 3G support for both AT&T in the U.S. and Rogers in Canada.

London Tube Map For S60 5th Edition

London Tube Map For S60 5th Edition

PixelsBeatPaper, which we pointed you to previously, is now rocking out with an interactive London Tube map, which is sure to come in handy for our UK readers! The ‘application’ installs as a widget, and gives you a draggable map that you can browse easily on your phone. The best part is that it doesn’t require an internet connection, and it loads up lightning quick - perfect if you need to find your way quickly.

There aren’t any extra features, such as the ability to quickly snap-to a specific stop, but still, it’s nice to have, and much better than hassling about with a PDF or similar. I’m sure there are other Tube maps out there, though. What apps do you use, and do you think they’re better than this?

Download TfL Tube Map from PixelsBeatPaper.co.uk

Update: PixelBeatsPaper have updated their website with a specific Maps section that not only offers the TfL map for London, but also the French Metro (installed and working fine on the 5800XM), as well as the NYC and Tokyo subway maps.

How to: Simple Convert Videos To Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG, iPhone…

xmedia recode 1 How to: Simple Convert Videos To Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG, iPhone...

Today I’ll show you how to convert videos for your Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, iPhone or whatever device in just a few steps. It’s easy as nothing, you don’t need to select any bitrates, codes or so. All you need is a little freeware application called XMedia Recode which you can be downloaded for free here.

After you installed the application open XMedia Recode and click on ‘Open File’ and choose the file you want to convert. Once you done that just select your profile, so your manufacture as well as the device’s name. Finally hit the video clip, click on ‘Add Job’ and hit ‘Encode’. Depending on how big the file is it takes some minutes/hour until you can drop the encoded video to your handset and enjoy it than.

As you can tell, this is really simple and fast. Of course, if you don’t like the pre-configured preferences you can changed them to improve the quality or to minimize the filesize but for me it’s fine. XMedia Recode is available for Windows 2000, XP and Vista. Apparently I haven’t found a version for Mac.

Here a video showing how smoothly and good the videos look on my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic:

Time to activate: set an amount of seconds until the screensaver becomes active

Show clock for: choose how long the creensaver will be active

Theme: choose either the two default backgrounds (which are really nice) or a custom image from your phone

Color: choose which color the clock and calendar will be displayed (black or white)

Transparency: choose how strong the clock and calendar will be drawn on the background picture

As usual, you can get a free 14 day trial over at MojosMobile, Though the app is very moderate priced at € 4,95. It is available for s60v3 devices aswell as for s60v5.

We also heard rumors that MojosMobile is working on TwitClock, which will be the same thing but with Twitter being integrated. Watch out for more

Twittix 0.93 soon to be released Preview and 5 licenses here

Twittix 0.93

Twittix 0.93 is on its way to the world of symbian smartphones and i was lucky enough to get my hands on a preview version of the app. I was even luckier by getting 5 licenses from MojosMobile to give away with it.

The main improvements in Version 0.93 are Twitpic support, Tweet/message to sms and the API Counter in my eyes.

Twitpic support: Well, not much to say about that, it gives you the possibility to directly post images to Twitpic from Twittix.

Tweet/message to sms: Very interesting feature. You can “send” the tweets directly to your message editor. So, if you grab something interesting there you want to share with your friends that are not on twitter (uh, is that possible nowadays anyway?), just sms them the tweet.

API Counter: Very nice feature again. You might already know it from tweetdeck. Twitter only allows 100 client API requests per hour, so if you update and check too often from any third party client it just might give you an error. With the API Counter you are able to check how many API requests you have left until the hourly reset.

The other improvements are minor but i still will mention them here.

Receptions in list of DM Tab added
Advanced Hotkey Functionality added: 1 = Instant Tweet 2= Account-Swtich * = FullScreen
Sound issues on some devices fixed!

So you can see, Twittix is under heavy construction and every release brings some new features requested by many users. I´m totally sure that when it reaches version 1.0, Twittix will be the most feature rich s60 client for Symbian devices. It works on v3 as well as on v5 devices. A 14 day trial is available at MojosMobile.

And here is your chance to win a free license code. Just mention in comments what you like/dislike (if you dislike it, dou you still want a license?) and what needs further improvement. The winner will be picked randomly when version 0.93 is released, which should be in less than 48 hours.

Edit: What i forgot, please leave a valid email address in comments if you want one of the licenses as we need to contact you in case of winning

Here some pictures showing a special edition of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. As you can tell, this version is special as it is black and silver instead of red or blue

The Silver Nokia 5800 changes the colour of the exterior colour band around the circumference of the casing from the red and blue of the previous models to a new silver finish, the overall casing colour stays as black which offsets the new silver banding perfectly.

Aside from this colour change the bones of the Nokia 5800 stay exactly the same offering all of the same great features and technology as the original red and more recent blue editions.

Interview with Mojos Studios Founder Boris Raczynski

Boris Raczynski

Mojos Studios was founded in 2007 by Boris Raczynski. With its apps for Symbian and other operating systems it is becoming more and more known. So, time for us to see what else is planned, what we can expect in future, andhave a deeper look into a software development studio. Boris was kind enough to answer a few questions that i hope you are interested in. Personally i think that we will see a lot of stuff coming from Mojos Studios, not only for Symbian devices.

Read on after the break for the full interview. And don´t forget to leave your comments.

Would you please give the readers an overview about Mojos Studios, size, programmers etc.?

In brief words, the Studios are my personal passion. Being the development arm of MojosMobile the Studios are our reply to the fast-growing demand of net operators and appstores for high-quality software products. Actually MojosMobile is focussed on games for all platforms. But times are changing! Two years ago game publishers, developers and aggregators of mobile games earned tremendous money. But in fact the developers were the last one in the revenue chain. They did the entire job and the publishers and aggregators were demanding more and more work by them. Not only to develop outstanding games but punishing them with super-sized demands for marketing materials. Developers more and more became downgraded to losers in that business.

Suddenly the market changed! Steve realized his dream and the iPhone hit the shell. What a surprise that all talented game developers jumped like crazy to this possibility! Earn money with your games! Now it became reality.

What this has to do with the Studios? Everything! Due to MojosMobile we have a network of about 450 shops, appstores and sales channels around the globe. We can reach more customers than any other Symbian Publisher. We started to distribute high-quality products of third party companies and then step by step more and more developers joined us. Nowadays we have joint ventures with 10 companies and developers. Still rising! That way even Symbian Developers can earn money finally!

It became obvious that we should start our own development division. So we did - the Studios!

Currently MojosMobile has 14 employees and lots of cool people who are working freelance for us.

What is your intention in developing Symbian apps?

Being the former CEO & Founder of famous Symbianware my intention is quite easy to explain: bring high-quality software products to the people.

What can we expect in the next few weeks from Mojos Studios?

Our famous mobile Twitter client Twittix will be published in version 1.0 very soon. We took care of all suggestions of our users and build in all their desires!

Well, and having Twittix it is obvious that this will not be our last solution concerning social communities and news information systems. Two more are already under development.

Furthermore seven typical end-user products will be published very soon.

We are not only engaged on the so called B2C market but we are working for corporate clients as well. And an outstanding mobile advertising solution is going to be introduced in about two weeks.

More? Sure! There is a lot to tune in S60 UI. We will do that!

You hit the market with quality software at low prices. Does that mean that other developers ripped us off all the years?

I would not say so. By times are changing. And the market as well. Why should users pay EUR 19.95 for a software product for Symbian when the same one is available for iPhone for 2.99?

We will publish high-quality products, well-designed and with eight years of experience in Symbian OS development inside - for reasonable prices!

What was/is your most favourite project at Mojos Studios?

Are you asking for my favourite project at MojosStudios and for the most thrilling one of the last years? Difficult to say. Each product deserves a lot of love, skill and passion.

But yes, we made an outstanding one some years ago. A full-skinner and complete replacement of the UIQ UI. And we have such a product under development at Studios!

With Twittix you released a well demanded software. Do you think it was a fault to release v 0.90 as paid version instead of a public beta? There were many complaints about the software.

I do not believe in public betas. And the sales and feedbacks of the users tell us that we are right with this point of view. Please consider that we are no one-man show but a professional company who is working for the big-players around the world.

Therefore we believe in Symbian Signed as well. Nokia follows this quality and security standard so we do!

Are there any plans on releasing other social networking apps? Social Networking seems to be the big future of the internet.

Oh yes!

Where do you see Symbian in 3 years?

The question is not where I see Symbian. As long as Nokia is using it everything will be fine. Well, they should finally remove all the bugs left from the EPOC past but in fact Symbian is a very powerful and reliable operation system.

Therefore the question should be: how do I see the software market for Symbian? For Nokia S60? Honestly spoken Nokia was not able to make anything well regarding this topic. Since years they are trying and trying and… N-Gage I, N-Gage II, Softwaremarket, Mosh… all these attempts had a questionable success.

I really hope that the friends in Finland will open their eyes and mind one day. And…guys do it fast!

Just check the Apple AppStore! Yes, hard to believe but success can be achieved so easy!

Let us wait for OVI until we will give this question a final answer!

Where do you see Mojos Studios in 3 years?

The worldwide Number 1 software maker for Symbian, what else?

You are not only coding for Symbian. Which OS do you think will be the best/most liked in the future?

Apple, not one single doubt in that. This company is leaded by a creative brain. Nothing can happen to them!
