Do you want to have fun in the pub? If so you should take a look at Igor’s latest application. XpressBeer is not a new application but it’s the first for S60 5th Edition. It looks as if you’re drinking beer using your N97, 5800 XpressMusic or the I8910 Omnia HD. The accelerometer based application is written in Phython and of course for free. Just install Python on the internal memory as well as the XpressBeer file.

LoudSpeaker-Handsfree features without a handsfree!

LoudSpeaker-Handsfree features without a handsfree!

Ever felt the need for a handsfree for your 5800? Especially during those wee hours in the office when you are typing furiously on your keyboard and just then your boss happens to call you to remind you a few things he wants done; you can’t afford to neglect the call so you have to give up your typing, to answer the call. Now there is LoudSpeaker v1.0.0 which will just let you enjoy the comfort of a handsfree sans the hardware and the annoying discomfort of something stuck in your ear. Besides I have read several times over that continuous earphone/headphone usage is no good for our ears. Thanks to symbian guru now you can enjoy the features of full fledged hands free just by running their application, LoudSpeaker in the background. Be it while driving or that busy hour in office, you won’t need a handsfree to answer a call, with this application. Well there must be a catch right? Yeah, there is one, this is one of the paid applications and you would have to shell US $ 9.99 (buy here) to enjoy the feature set of this application. Is it worth 10 bucks? Well, lets find out that.

Installation

Loudspeaker settings screen

Loudspeaker settings screen

Loudspeaker v 1.0.0 can be downloaded from MobiHand here. You can even try this application before proceeding to buy this application. 5800 being a s60 v5 phone, we need to download another application to be be able to use LoudSpeaker, called VoipAudioServer v 2.0, which can be downloaded from here. Installation as such is pretty straightforward and you can start using the application in a minute or so.

Features

The settings screen is pretty straightforward and users can decide if they want to autostart LoudSpeaker. I would personally advice against this for this application drains the battery at an alarming rate. I have been testing this application for around 2 days now and my 5800 could last only one day on full charge, with LoudSpeaker always running in the background.

As can be seen from the screenshot to the right, users can assign a specific profile to Loudspeaker, meaning, the application will be functional only in this profile. Other than that users can set the time lag between the first ring and auto answer along with sound on answer and hang up to alert themselves on the state of call, without having to look on the phone screen.

Pros

  1. Easy to use application
  2. Brings handsfree like features sans the hardware

Cons

  1. Drains battery at an alarming rate

Verdict

LoudSpeaker is one of the very innovative applications, bringing one of the most commonly used feature(handsfree) without relying on the hardware required. I personally like the auto answer with auto loudspeaker turned on without me having to do anything other than keeping the application running in the background. However, all these amazing features come at the price of rapid battery drainage, limiting the usage of this application over extended periods of time. The application may be a very good substiution for a handsfree while driving or even while working, provided you have connected your 5800 to a charger. In all, if you need a handsfree solution and either dont want to spend on handsfree kit or if you are bothered about discomfort arising from personal handsfree kits, LoudSpeaker is a great solution and at US $ 9.99 is much cheaper than most of the bluetooth handsfree kits available in market today.

Nokia 5800 Continues to Rule the Market

Nokia 5800

Nokia 5800

The last few weeks have seen many a handset being released from several manufacturers including Nokia; most of them targeting the touch-screen smarthphone segment. While our very own Nokia 5800 has been in this segment for quiet a while now (launched in October 2008), it still continues to be the market leader in this segment outperforming some of its pricier rivals of the competition.

Our friends at My Nokia Blog have reported that Nokia 5800 is the leading pay-monthly phone, going by the statistics of Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s largest independent handset retailer; with more than 1700 stores spread across Europe. What’s fascinating is the fact that Nokia 5800 beats Apple’s iPhone, the darling of masses. (Check the gallery below for the whole list)

Nokia's smartphones considerd in the review

Well, critics may argue that Nokia 5800, being priced at entry level smartphone segment, has a definite price advantage over the competition. But its not only the price but it beats its competition in performance too. Steve Litchfield over at All About Symbian weighed Nokia 5800 against some of the best smartphones in market today for speaker performance, and our 5800 outperforms the competition by a distance, scoring a perfect 10, with some of the most hyped smartphones of 2009 like Nokia N97 scoring a paltry 4 on a scale of 10! (Check the gallery below for complete statistics)

So fellow 5800 users, we are still among the elite of smartphone users, even after 8 months in competition. True that 5800 lacks in hardware specifications when compared to some of the recent devices, but we have our advantages, be it better speaker performance as highlighted by Steve Litchfield or the attractive pricing, that makes our 5800 the new darling of masses!

Blogger Widget: Homescreen

Blogger Widget: Homescreen

I have been waiting since long for a proper blogger client to let me blog directly from my 5800. The wait has been rather long, with Google overlooking symbian platform in favour of iPhone and its very own Android platform. Thanks to phoneytunes.com, now I don’t have to wait for Google to come up with a blogger client for my 5800.Blogger widget is not a full fledged blogger client but it does provide basic blogger services like new post, edit post and view post.

Installation

Blogger widget can be downloaded from ovi store client or the ovi webstore. For some reason, this widget is yet to appear on the ovi webstore but it was very much available on ovi client, from where I downloaded it to my 5800 and before I forget, yeah its free!

Its a 420 kb set up file, that will take around 5-10 s to download over wi-fi and the preceeding installation is quick, without any settings to be chosen whatsoever, during the course of installation. You should be able to fire up the application and start blogging in around a min (including download and installation).Features

As I said earlier, this is a very basic blogger widget which brings basic blogger functions to our 5800s. By basic I mean, users can update their blog, but thats limited to only text and there is no support for inserting pictures and videos from the widget itself. This is one feature am eagerly waiting for and till now its been one long frustrating wait and this widget is no solution either. I would be very glad if any developer comes up with an application that can provide these options.

Blog compose mode

Blog compose mode

Posting from the widget works great. I drafted a sample text only post and the whole posting process is very simple. Just click on new post, login with your blogger id (you need to type the whole email addreess, including gmail.com for logging in) and a compose window as seen in the adjacent screenshot appears. Just type the post and type on submit, thats it, your blog has been updated.

I couldn’t check the edit posts and view posts section as the widget either didnt respond or crashed contniously when I tried to attempt the same (Check the gallery below for the white screen which continuosly appeared when I tried to edit post and view post from the widget). I would be glad if any of our readers are able to get this working and leave some feedback here.

Pros

  1. Fairly well designed widget for a touch screen device
  2. Posting new posts is simple and fast

Cons

  1. No support for uploading pictures and videos directly from the widget
  2. Username and Password cannot be saved on the widget
  3. Doesn’t respond as fast as some other widgets in market today

Verdict

While am very glad that there is some widget/application at last that brings blogger access to symbian 5th edition devices, am rather unhappy with the feature set and performance of the widget. Other than updating blog(text only), there are no features whatsoever to talk about that can be done from the widget. My hunt for that blogger client is still on and I hope to find one soon. Ofcourse there is Blog Live, which is highly rated blogging application but for some reason I am not able to setup the client for my blogger account (have no idea what xmlrpc URL refers to). I even contacted the tech team of bloglive which pointed the finger on blogger and till now (its been like 2 months now), I am waiting for someone to answer my querry in the blogger forum. Coming back to this widget, it may not offer an attractive feature set but considering that its a free widget, a widget and not a client, you may want to try this widget and above everything its free. Posting fro the widget is definitely faster and easier than posting from opera mini browser. So if you have a blogger account, this widget is something you would want to have on your 5800.

NOISEttes’ Video Shot Entirely Using Nokia 5800s

Fans shooting Noissetes' artist Shingai Shoniwa

NOISEttes, the UK based indie rock band, who have been promoting Nokia 5800 ever since its launch in UK have finally kept to their word of shooting an entire video solely on Nokia 5800.

The band has been a fan of sorts of our Nokia 5800s for quiet sometime now. First they performed a secret gig in UK for the Nokia 5800 Comes With Music Launch by Orange in UK.

The band consisting of singer and bassist Shingai Shoniwa, guitarist Dan Smith, and drummer Jamie Morrison, got their first taste of success with their second single “Don’t Upset the Rhythm”, which went on to reach the number 2 position in UK Singles chart in Spring 2009. Following up on their recent success, NOISEttes have tied up with Nokia in what may be the trend of the future for promotion of music, to promote their latest single on Nokia’s flagship Music Xpress device, Nokia 5800.

In a bid to impress theier fans, NOISEttes gathered in Haggerston Pools building in Hackney, East London and let fans shoot the video with their Nokia 5800s. Check the gallery below for some shots captured from the event. You can also check out the single on NOISEttes myspace page. The single which was being shot using 5800s is called, “Saturday Night” and will be available to music enthusiasts in a month or so. Till then check the gallery below for some shots captured from the event and yeah we are also eagerly waiting to see how good our 5800 camera performed in capturing an official music video.
