Adobe Reader doesn’t need any introduction, does it? Well, you may know that since Adobe pdf is one of the most widely used document formats today, Adobe PDF Reader has been a standard office package for the s60 third edition with the immensely popular Quickoffice.

However as of today, a fully functional Quickoffice continues to elude the s60 fifth edition devices. But, our developer friends at Quickoffice have been good enough to offer Adobe Reader as a stand-alone application. Lets see how this PDF viewer app fares on our Nokia 5800s. Read more »

New Firmware. New Features?

New Firmware. New Features?

Recently, rumors that our favorite Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone will be receiving a major firmware update is circulating in the internet. Included in this firmware upgrade are certain addressed issues and functional tweaks.

Some rumored functional and aesthetic improvements are the kinetic scrolling in the web browser and contacts list. Kinetic or flick scrolling is an awesome feature that iPhone introduced where the user “flicks” the screen and the unit responds with a fluid scrolling function. Double tap will zoom into the screen. That will look great in the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone.

Shock Shuffle Game for Nokia N97 and Nokia 5800

Posted by Isaac Wong Saturday, July 18, 2009 0 comments

This Nokia N97 game is based on the classic ping pong game (arcade game). It has 4 levels: easy, medium, hard and ultra with semi transparent menu, excellent graphics and eye catching background. Using your movable bar, just send the ball back to the opponent. There is a pad at the bottom screen you can use to control the movable bar. The opponent will get point once that ball falls. But you will get point once the opponent fails to catch the ball.

Have you been missing that “Whac-a-Mole” game of your bulky old phone? Well, lets see if this new game, Speedtouch Lite, a flash based game, which recently appeared in the Ovi store can be a good substitute for “Whac-a-mole.”

You must be wondering if we have missed something here, as our Tube lacks a physical numpad for that “whacking” action but rest assured SpeedTouch Lite makes fair use of the Touchscreen capability of the symbian fifth edition OS. The game feels much better than the “Whac-a-mole”, as you actually get to touch the bubbles here as opposed to hitting on the num pad, which at times can be confusing. Read more »

Strobe

Strobe is yet another very handy application, delivered by by Offscreen Technologies for the symbian fifth edition platform. If BrightLight bought torch light feature to our 5800, Strobe now brings Stroboscopic lamp features to 5800. In case you didn’t know what Stroboscopic lamps or Strobes are: its a device that can produce regular flashes of light which are most commonly seen in clubs and alarm systems and are great for SOS signalling. So you may want this application on your 5800 for your next hiking trip. While we definitely wish you don’t need to resort to SOS signalling, we want you to “be prepared”, if the need arise.

Installation

Strobe v1.0 is one of the new applications to have surfaced in the recent overhaul of ovi store and can be downloaded for free the Ovi client. At around300 kb, its one of the thriftiest packages, meaning download and installation is simple and fast. After installation, the application takes up around 425 kb, just in case you were worrying about applications hogging precious memory space on your 5800.

Nokia 5800 App Review: Spb Wallet v2.00 (11243)

Template Categories in SPB Wallet

Template Categories within SPB Wallet

Aren’t you bugged from having to register at every other website you browse these days? I am sure most of internet surfers can identify with me when I say that nothing annoys me more than a “Username and Password don’t match” message or its derivatives displayed on these websites! Now this is where applications come into picture and when it comes to password management, Spb Wallet by Spb Software has to be the best application in this genre.

Installation

Spb Wallet is paid application and is priced at US $ 29.95. A free trial can be downloaded from Handango here. Please note that you will be eligible for 20% discount, if you have previously purchased any application for Spb Software. As followers of our blog, if you did go by our suggestion and bought Spb Puzzle, now is the time to redeem 20% discount for your purchase of Spb Wallet.

As seen with Spb Puzzle reviewed earlier in our blog, the setup file for Spb Wallet is also gigantic, at 3.6 MB and hence not advisable for download on mobile data plans. (After installation, it takes up only around 2 MB of space on the device memory/memory card). Also since there is an additional desktop client, which can be used to sync with mobile as well as offers web integration on IE and Firefox, downloading on desktop/notebook is recommended.

Nokia 5800 App Review: BrightLight v1.00(0)

Control Switch

Control Switch

As you may have noticed by now, Ovi Store has been brimming with a new set of applications for the last few days. As on Friday, I was not able to download any of these new applications, but things changed towards good as the weekend progressed. I successfully downloaded and installed some of these new applications and the best part is most of them are actually very useful applications. I will start with an application, which if you ask me should have been built-in into the s60 fifth edition OS but when a third party developer is providing it for free, there is no pointing in complaining about it, right? Offscr Technologies continue their goodwork and with BrightLight, they bring an easy-to-use torch light function to our 5800, that utilises the two LEDs of the camera flash for illumination and not the screen as with Ever Light, reviewed earlier.

Installation

BrightLight can be downloaded for free from the ovi store client. The installation file is around 370 kb and after installation it takes up around 450 kb of space on the phone memory/memory card (depending on where you install it). Its one of the most compact applications and installation is done in a blink of an eye.

Inspired by the success of MyPhone, which definitely is the hottest application for 5800 today, MMMOOO has come up with this fully functional android emulator-M1. As with MyPhone, M1 is an application launcher for s60 devices and makes your Nokia 5800 interface like a Google Android one. As you can see, the S60 can be easily converted into many other interfaces to look like them and Nokia 5800 or Nokia N97 are good examples of touchscreen phones where the emulators are the best. Exclusive: Sneak Preview of MyPhone v2.2 (Part 2)

As promised we are back with a few more screenshots of the next version of MyPhone. Please note that as readers of our blog, you are among the first to get a glimpse of these images as we are as always the first source on the web to publish these screenshots. Sit back and enjoy as we show you some of the best features of the next version of MyPhone Infinite.

SMS Interface

Scr000481

iPhone like SMS interface

We did tell you about the iPhone style SMS interface in our earlier post and now we are providing you with a few screenshots to drool over as you wait to get your hands on the latest version of MyPhone.

While the earlier versions of MyPhone just provided the front end enhancement for various applications, developers at MMMOOO have now successfully incorporated a SMS client which will blend perfectly with the theme of iPhone or rather MyPhone on 5800. With this new SMS interface, MyPhone is inching towards its slogan of Exceeding iPhone and we definitely love it. Its not only an interface as with other applications, its a fully functional SMS client in the sense that users can edit and send their SMS within the same interface for that extended iPhone like feel.

Other than the new SMS interface, MyPhone packs in another surprise package in the form of all new sketch pad application. Its a standalone paint like application very much similar to the “Drawing” application on N97. Check out our gallery below for a few screenshots of the iPhone like SMS interface and the all new Sketchpad application that comes along with MyPhone v2.2.

Just a few more days and you could very well be toying with this application on your 5800s. You can buy here the MyPhone Infinite latest version.

Game Review: Solo Noble

Game-screen

Game-screen

Solo noble is the today’s game review. Remember that solo board with marbles, you used to play with during those hot summer afternoons? It used to be one of my favourite board games during my childhood and am sure most of you would identify with me.

But now, neither do I have that board nor the marbles, but I just found an application that lets me play this classic game on my 5800. Offscr Technologies are building on their reputation of offering the best applications/games for the s60 fifth editions devices with yet another adaptation of board game to a touch screen device.

Installation

For some reason this game was pulled off from Ovi store from where I had originally downloaded the game but fret not we do care about our readers and we make sure that we source them the links to the best applications/games available over the web. So we are hosting the demo version of this game and our readers can download the same from here . The installation file is around 350 Kb and as with most apps/games from Offscr Technologies, installation is simple, fast and you can start playing in no time.

nokia-5800-xpressmusic

There is a new firmware for 5800 doing rounds in the inter-circles of web since June 22. Available for a selected few product codes (maily HongKong) and the firmware version is v21.0.101 and not v31.0.15 as has been widely rumored in blogosphere, which was previously covered in our blog here.

While there has been no official changelong released by Nokia, users who have updated their firmware have reported improved browsing experience on the default symbian browser and as with every firmware update the phone is more responsive and faster with the new update. There is a marginal improvement in the camera performance as well, which has been one of the most sought after feature by most of the 5800 users, ever since it was launched. Its good to know that Nokia have finally responded to requests from 5800 users. However Kinetic scrolling continues to baffle 5800 as of now.

removed DRM protected from Music Store for Mobile Phones

read more about Tunebite in the hall of fame

"if we’re talking about easy to use and effective software, Tunebite is the clear-cut winner"

Netzwelt

My Rating: 4/5 stars (Excellent)

Overall, Tunebite is useful, but its interface and lack of features can be frustrating. That's why I give 4 out of 5 stars rating.

The songs that you can buy for instance in Nokia store or other music stores are often DRM protected. So you can´t use them on other devices.

A software like Tunebite is very helpful for customers who bought music with copy protection. Tunebite re-records the songs to remove the copy protection in a legal way.

Tunebite enables you to convert your DRM protected audio and video files into unprotected MP3, OGG, WMA,WAV,WMV,MP4 or M4V files. As long as your computer is authorized to play the protected files, the program can convert them, without breaking any of the copy protection. It uses high speed dubbing and virtual sound card drivers to record a high quality duplicate of the original. Tunebite Platinum also includes a CD burning feature to create audio CDs from your favorite songs and a ringtone creator that enables you to create ringtones for your cellphone. Other features include mobile device synchronization, normalization and support for ID3 tags and album art. The program is compatible with DRM protected files from iTunes, Windows Media and Audible.

TuneBite Premium is a flashy program that does a good job of converting music but isn’t really as good as it first appears. MP3 downloads and other music files are easy to convert, making TuneBite very useful.

But TuneBite has some weaknesses that weigh it down. It makes it look complicated when it really isn’t. But TuneBite does have some useful capabilities for syncing with MP3 players and iPods.I

One thing that catch my eyes is the Surf & Catch function , I can Download the video using Surf & Catch by just watching the video or movie from most of the broadcasting station like youtube, Dailymotion, Myspace, Bliptv, metacafe and even erotic videos, cool.. But of course it's not suitable for under age students. This is one thing I will give an A+ for it..

view this video trailer here

One advantage of TuneBite is the customer support. There are the standard email support and FAQ available if you have questions. But TuneBite also has a forum where other TuneBite users can help each other and explain how to get the most out of the program. We also appreciated the video tutorials on the TuneBite site that help you run through all the features and menus you need to use. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with the display because it is so cluttered and confusing at first.

Some official review about Tunebite.

Tunebite is the best solution to remove copy protection from music, audio books, and films & then convert it to one of 100 file formats. Since 2004, Tunebite has been mentioned and singled out for excellence in more computer trade publications than any other legal software solution that removes DRM copy protection. Tunebite legally removes the audio DRM copy protection from music & audio books by re-recording it at up to 54x the speed. With either the playback software or Tunebite, additional copyrighted music & audio book files can be copied by using the virtual CD-burner. Tunebite has one of a kind quality control with "PerfectAudio", guaranteeing error-free audio output. Tunebite turns the PC into a high-performance, Video DRM converter and ensures the synchronicity of video & audio while the copyrighted video files are played back. In the process, Tunebite legally photographs, frame by frame, the replayed, copyrighted films & saves them in the desired format. Tunebite informs you of the expected output quality of the files to be converted based on the operating system and PC performance & also warns of a loss in quality before converting files on PCs with weaker performance. The quality is also inspected during conversion. After the conversion is complete, Tunebite provides tips, in the rare event that problems do arise, to avoid such problems that may occur. Lots of extras: audio recorder for recording music from web radios (e.g. Last.fm), video recorder for video portals (e.g. Youtube) & automatically finds ID3 tags, album artwork & song lyrics. Files can be played using your own player or with Winamp, Apple iTunes or Microsoft Windows Media Player. Music can be dubbed by synching cell phones, MP3 players, Apple iPods & other portable devices. There is a generator for individual cell phone ringtones. CD burning capabilities for audio CDs, audio DVDs and MP3 CD are also included.

A comment from other user.

"Personally very satisfied with the ID3 editing function, but the output preference settings are very dazlling for newbies like me, thus I chose XXXXXsoft XXXX Converter for easy use and lower price."

How to take photos on the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music(taken from allaboutsymbian)
======================================
Most phones have cheap cameras that use a technique called "fixed focus", which means the camera lens doesn't move. This lowers the quality of photos, because the camera cannot adjust its focus to match what you're taking a picture of.

The Nokia 5800 has a better type of camera called "autofocus", which allows the lens to move and automatically focus. Photos taken with auto focus cameras are generally much better than those from fixed focus cameras.

Photos on the 5800 are at their best if you use the various camera options to their fullest. Here's a quick guide to the main icons in the camera application:

Nokia 5800 camera application

The camera button is your friend!
=========================
The 5800's camera can be switched on by pressing the camera button on the right side of the phone. Once the camera application is running, pressing the button again takes the picture.

However, that's not all. Like a standalone camera, the 5800's camera button knows how far in you've pressed it, and if you only press it part-way the camera will focus without taking the picture.

When you want to take a picture on the 5800, first make sure the subject of the picture is in the middle of the square on the screen, then press the camera button in part-way until the square turns green and bleeps, which indicates the picture is in focus. When the square is green, press the button in the rest of the way to take the actual photo.

The image options box is also your friend!
===============================
The 5800's camera has most of the settings options you'd find on a standalone camera, and a number of preset modes for various different situations. All of these options and modes can be found in the options box, by selecting the icon that looks like horizontal lines.

MyPhone v2.2 Menu Screen

MyPhone v2.2 Menu Screen

We were the first source on the web, to bring you a sneak preview of Android emulator, M1 and now we are again the first source to give our readers a sneak of the latest version of: you guessed it right, MyPhone-Infinite. We are making a habit of being the first with anything that’s related to 5800. As much as we love our 5800s, we love to bring the latest news and reviews, along with some free licenses to give away to our fellow 5800 users.

If MyPhone v2.11 was impressive, MyPhone v2.2 will blow your mind away! I am not exaggerating what so ever when I say this but the latest version is indeed a(n) (iPhone) killer application.

Our developer friends at MMMOOO never take a break, do they? After launching the Android emulator-M1 last month, they have now revamped the most happening application on 5800. With their latest version of MyPhone, MMMOOO has responded to some requests from users of earlier versions of MyPhone and added a few innovative features of their own. The result: an awesome emulator that will make your non 5800/n97 friends go gaga over you. With MyPhone v2.2, not only will you have the mighty symbian as your OS but also a working interface of the most happening phone a.k.a over hyped phone of the world: iPhone.

Whats new in v2.2? Well, the official change-log should be up at the MMMOOO website when its released in a few days. However, some of the changes that are worth mentioning are:

  1. Faster and more responsive performance
  2. Languages supported: Chinese and English (German and French to be added soon)
  3. All new icon set with no need for manual configuration of default symbian applications (This is the best feature in my view)
  4. iPhone like SMS interface (Users asked for it and MMMOOO delivered it!!)

Do take a look at the gallery below for some screenshots highlighting the new features.

Searching for the all new SMS interface? Well, you will have to wait for 2 more days to get a glimpse of that and believe me its definitely worth the wait. Adiós till then and don’t forget to keep checking our blog for the latest news and reviews on 5800.

You can buy the version 2.11 and then upload to the v 2.22 when released, here!

5800 to get Firmware Update Soon?

nokia-5800-xpressmusicBlogosphere is effervescent with rumours of 5800 getting a firmware update to v31.0.0.15. While there has been no official news or comments from Nokia on this topic, bloggers across the globe have been speculating v31.0.0.15 from the video of Ovi suite 2.0, posted over at Nokia Conversations. (Check the video after the break)

It all started with Vikas from Fone Arena who was quick to spot the v31.0.0.15 firmware being shown during the video at 0:57 minutes. However the screenshot also shows the present version of firmware as v15.0.0.15, which never made it to the NSU public servers or FOTA. So whether v31.0.015 will ever make it our 5800s is something only time can tell. So please do take this news or should I say rumour with a pinch of salt!

Nokia 5800 Game Review: Spb Puzzle v1.00(0)

Welcome screen

Welcome screen

Remember those jigsaw puzzles and hours of engrossing game play, putting the pieces together? Jigsaw puzzles were one of my favorite puzzles during those lazy afternoons of summer vacation. Well, now you dont have to head to the nearest store to get your hands on a jigsaw puzzle. Your 5800 is all you need to enjoy this game in your spare time. Spb Puzzle by Spb Software is an excellent game, bringing jigsaw puzzles to our beloved 5800s.

Installation

Spb Puzzle is a paid game costing US $ 9.95 and can be either be downloaded from ovi store or from the official website of Spb Softwares. The setup file, at 7.1 MB is one of the biggest set up files I have seen so far for any application/game on s60 5th edition device. Download from the official website is surprisingly fast, making me double check if the file is really 7 MB large. Spb Software seems to have reserved sufficient bandwidth for game downloads and rightly so, I still remember the sorry state of Ovi client when it was first launched this May. I already have a good feeling about this game! I hope more application/game developers learn from this and reserve sufficient bandwidth for their download pages.
