Barcoo is a service allowing you to scan products in the supermarket to get information about this product. You can scan for example chocolate or any other barcode you find. It gives you information about the product, the best price, reviews, healthy-information, wikipedia-links and much more. The application is available for free and runs on all S60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition devices. Unfortunately, the application is available only in German but you can use it anyways. Head over to download the application. I really like the application how about you?

We remember a lot of you compaint initially on the lack of applications available for Nokia 5800. Since Nokia 5800 launched with the latest Symbian S60 5th edition, there were not many apps available. But now you must be happy to see new apps popping up every other day and the old ones updating for the S60V5 platform.

Pikkoo Screensaver Manager‘ v0.9.2 is the latest outstanding application just out for the Symbian S60 V5 phones like Nokia 5800 and forthcoming Nokia N97. Pikkoo enables anyone to create, download and share interactive mobile screensavers and wallpapers for free. Read more »

Wondering where all your money is going? Fret not for there is just the right application which will give you the big picture of your expenses and investments in just one screen. I was looking for a handy application to monitor my daily expenses for I was sick and tired of spreadsheet applications. Enter Jabplite a Java MIDP based application for the symbian 5th edition devices written by Malcolm Bryant of FreePOC and all my accounting needs were answered. Jabplite, as Malcolm Bryant puts it is a “sophisticated personal finance program” available across several mobile platforms. Its sophisticated for sure as I couldn’t make head and tail of the application till I went through the FAQs. However once I understood the basic terminologies, the application evolved from a geek box to my best buddy.

Installation

Jabplite is available as a free download from the developers of FreePOC at this link. You will find several low resolution screenshots of Jabplite here, but dont worry Jabplite wont look anything like that on your 5800. Please make sure that you download the right version for 5800 (Java Generic MIDP2 phone). Its also a good idea to download the zip file for it contains all the necessary documentation for using Jabplite on your mobile devices. I would suggest everyone to go through the FAQ section before using Jabplite on your phones.

Alternatively Jabplite can be downloaded directly on to your 5800s by pointing the mobile browser to wap.getjar.com, select quick download and enter quick download code 1060 for Jabplite.

Nokia 5800 Game Review: Sensitive 5800

By alexandr3 | May 15, 2009

Sensitive 5800 is the game that I will be here reviewing for you, but have in mind that I’m not the kind of guy who feels the need for fully packed action games on my mobile, with stunning graphics and all the bells’n'whistles that comes along with them. No. All I want/need from a mobile game is to be entertaining in those moments, where you have no other option but to… play something in your mobile! The one truly thing that is always with you. When you’re waiting for the bus, when you’re travelling and don0′t like the landscape, when you’re in the bathroom doing.. you know.. so I prefer games that can be played through levels where you can start from where you left, and that can somehow, make you think about some strategy. Something not too obvious.

This is why I find the Sensitive 5800 so great. It’s is really really simple and it reminds me of one of the best mobile games I ever played (Vexon - I think). All you need to do is go across the yellow platforms and make them all fall before you hit exit. It seems simple and it is in some levels. Others will make you think and imagine the whole path in your head before you start tapping the stylus on the screen. Or you can also play with your fingers (although I have not felt a good user experience. It was much harder to control). It’s up to you.

Nokia 5800 App Review: Timer

By alexandr3 | May 14, 2009

timer_0S60 never had a stopwatch counter. (Maybe Nokia 5500 had one… I can’t remember.) And this is something that someone like me, a common mortal can’t understand.
Fortunately, there’s always somebody who develops the code and application and shares with everybody else.

That’s what Offscreen Technologies did!

This is as simple as it gets. You get 4 buttons oddly placed in the screen and if you tap them you’ll get an “about”, a “start”, a “close” and a “lap” function.

It does what you expect from a stopwatch, but design wise it could be much better. For starters, it doesn’t include landscape mode (which you may think should be mandatory) and as said above, the buttons look like they have been placed there as they could have been places elsewhere.

With timer you can naturally register your lap values. However, you can’t have more than 4 laps at the same time which, considering the big screen of the 5800, is simply screen timer_1space going to waste.

In the end this will work if you need to know how long does it take to run along a track, or if you want to know how fast you can tap “start/stop” (that’s funny too). Don’t expect the best of designs and there’s no countdown functionality. This would be an extra value for this application, but unfortunately you don’t get that, at least on this release.

But in the end it’s still worth to have it on your phone, especially because I don’t know of any other application that does this particular job!

Download it here.

Nokia 5800 App Review: Gmail Client

By sushant | May 14, 2009

I have always dreamed of having gmail access on my phone, for gmail is not only my email client, but also my online deposit box with a soft copy of all my important documents and files. Be it my latest resume or my university transcripts or a scan copy of my passport, I have it all on my gmail. Just give me internet access and I can source all my documents for you, anywhere, anytime! So that made a gmail client on my 5800 a “must have” and lets see how it fares on 5800.

Installation:

Gmail client can be downloaded right on to your mobile, by just pointing your mobile browser to m.google.com/mobile

The installation process is simple, intuitive and fast. Once the application is installed, one needs to configure the client to interact with your gmail account. All this is done in one step: just signing in with your gmail account on the client. It cannot any get simpler than that, can it?

Now lets move on and explore the feature set of gmail client on 5800. The default screen looks something like this:

Welcome screen
Welcome screen

It can be seen that almost 50% of the screen-space is hogged by the navigation buttons which are not really needed for using the client. Lets fix that straightaway. To get rid of the onscreen navigation buttons, go to menu (main menu on the phone and not gmail client menu)-> settings-> application manager-> installed apps.-> gmail-> options-> suite settings-> on-screen keyboard: off

With this setting your client will look something like this:

Full screen-inbox
Full screen-inbox

Now this is a welcome change, just a minor tweak and our client looks so much better now. Lets move and explore other options now:
