Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Freeware: TrueCaller

Posted by Isaac Wong Monday, August 17, 2009 0 comments

Recently I stumbled upon Daily Mobile forums and found this nice app for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and other Symbian S60v3. So basically this is an app that allows its user to see who’s calling them. Doesn’t sound like it is a special app? well, this free app is able to let the phone owner to know who’s calling them EVEN if they do not have the number saved on their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Now that is what I call cool :)

The freeware TrueCaller is currently available in more than 20 countries and it works on the background and activates when you receive calls or SMS. One more thing, you need to have access to 3G network to get all the freeware’s goodness :)

Anyway, here is how the Truecaller free app works:

  • You receive a phone call from a number that is not saved in your phone book
  • TrueCaller searches for the number in our databases
  • If TrueCaller finds the number it will be displayed on your screen. If number is not found you will be prompted, “No matches found…”
  • When phone call has ended TrueCaller will ask you if you want to save the caller to your phone book (if the caller is found)

Here are the list of supported countries:

  1. Austria
  2. Belgium
  3. Canada
  4. Cuprys
  5. Denmark
  6. Estonia
  7. France
  8. Germany
  9. Greece
  10. Iceland
  11. Israel
  12. Italy
  13. Luxemburg
  14. Netherlands
  15. Norway
  16. Philippines
  17. Romania
  18. Spain
  19. Sweden
  20. Switzerland
  21. USA *NEW*

PS: they promised us that more countries will be supported. Isn’t that great? They also said that even though it was initially made for Symbian S60v3, it also works on Symbian S60v5 and Windows MObile! Great huh? IF that is not enough, they posted an image of “iPhone, coming soon”… So this is a good news for all :)

Ok, here is the link to download TrueCaller freeware for your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic .

You can find more on its official site here (including links to download the freeware to your S60v5 devices and windows mobile)

If iXP was impressive with its looks and feel of XP on Nokia 5800, how about having Windows 7 on 5800s sound like? Unbelievable, ain’t it. Windows 7 the latest OS from the benches of Microsoft, which is yet to see the ray of light is already the most talked about OS in the web today.

The developer folks at MMMOOO seem to have realised the potential of this promising OS from Microsoft and being pro-active as they are have released Win 7, a Windows 7 emulator for symbian devices. While we are still waiting to get our hands on the final version of Windows 7 for our desktops and notebooks, we are glad to see the familiar interface on our Tube 5800s. Screenshots and other Win 7 tidbits after the break. Read more »

I had recently upgraded my firmware to the latest version, after which I upgraded my Nokia Maps application to the latest version i.e Ovi Maps 3.0. I had to do a Hard Reset for some reason which downgraded my Ovi Maps application back to Nokia Maps 2.0. After the Hard Reset, I was unable to use Nokia Maps application. Every time I tried to use it, I got an error asking me to upgrade my Maps application.

I would like to call this a bug because currently users can use both the versions of Nokia Maps 2.0 and 3.0. However, whatever happens after a Hard Reset is not under the user’s control. If the Hard Reset downgrades Ovi Maps 3.0 to Nokia Maps 2.0, the user should still be able to use the older version which is Nokia Maps 2.0. But this does not happen, the user is forced to upgrade to Ovi Maps 3.0.

For this very reason, I have written this post which details the step by step procedure for upgrading from Nokia Maps 2.0 to Ovi Maps 3.0 and then downloading the latest maps for the desired location. I have also included the process of acquiring a trial navigation license for 7 days.

Upgrading Nokia Maps 2.0 to Ovi Maps 3.0 -

1. Visit the following link and download the Nokia Maps Updater application. Install the application on your computer system.

2. I assume that you have successfully downloaded and installed the Nokia Maps Updater application. Connect your Nokia 5800 phone to your computer. Launch the application. Note: You need to have the latest Nokia PC Suite installed in your computer as well.

The first version of MyPhone - August 2008

As I was saying the first MyPhone was released by August last year and got a lot of buzz around the web, but the best from MyPhone just came when they released the MyPhone for S60 5th edition devices, which was the first version for Nokia 5800. I remember very well when the folks from MMMOOO contacted us and we reviewed this version of MyPhone, after seeing the review of Myphone by Jametif I immediately bought one MyPhone application for myself and indeed a great job was done by MMMOOO with this app. After 1 year of developing the MyPhone, MMMOOO folks have now much more experience and many other applications have been build, like the Win7 or the iXP.

I have gone through a number of articles explaining how to hack your Nokia 5800 which I found very interesting but useless. There are a number of reasons why I suggest not hacking your phone.

  • You tend to install a number of SIS files you cannot trust. They can have a resident Trojan.
  • In a number of hacking tricks, there is a server installed which runs in the background and facilitates the installation of apps without certificates. Now, this server eats both your RAM and memory space.
  • By hacking your phone you actually break the security shield provided by Nokia which in some cases may cancel your warranty by Nokia too. That means if something happens to your phone even by a hardware failure, Nokia gets a chance to escape saying you modified the proprietary software provided by Nokia.

Generally, I won’t suggest you even adopting the process of signing the unsigned apps. But, since the Nokia 5800 users tend to be adventurous, they often adopt any method for installing the unsigned apps so I thought at least this process which I am suggesting is a bit better one if not the best. This at least ensures that you get to keep the inbuilt security alive and going with Nokia’s warranty norms.

Please follow the instructions below to understand the process of signing unsigned apps.

Step-1: Visit http://andy.ehandysoft.com/devcert.php (Visit this link. You will find two text boxes. The one where you need to provide your IMEI number and other where you need to verify the image. After filling in both the data correctly click on the submit button. On the next page, you receive a message confirming the submission of your request for a Symbian Developer’s Certificate. You need this certificate for signing any unsigned app. This certificate is exclusive for your device and you cannot sign apps for any other device using this certificate. The worst part is that you need to wait 24 Hrs for your certificate to get generated. I know this sucks but trust me this certificate is worth this wait. This certificate costs 20$ if you request this with “Symbiansigned.com”. With this certificate, you can sign 95% of the unsigned apps that you get on the internet.
