Offscreen Technologies, one of the best known developers for the symbian fifth edition platform have been doling out christmas giveaways on the ovi store for a while now. If you have been following closely on the development over at the ovi store, you would have noticed that Offscreen has been dishing out one paid app after another, sans the price tag.

The latest to join the bandwagon of paid to free apps/games from Offscreen Technologies is the Airport Touch, a fun little game, wherein the gamer has to direct the incoming flights to the landing strip of a virtual airport. Sounds interesting? Hit on the jump button for more tid-bits of this game on our 5800s. Read more »

Nokia Image Space is an experimental research project and currently in the beta phase. It allows you to link your Flickr account and view all your pictures as well as those from your friends to which you have access. To use Image Space, it is required that you have a Yahoo account because it only integrates with Flickr currently.

Nokia Image Space actually allows you to create a snapshot of the area around you. As per Beta Labs, when you have enough photos for a particular area, Nokia Image Space will create a 3D presentation of the area. However, this particular feature is still under development and will be implemented in a couple of phases.

The supported browsers include IE, Safari and Firefox and you must have Adobe Flash 10 plugin for these browsers. Nokia Image Space has not been tested with Nokia 5800 however, it is known to support S60 5th Edition and tested on N97 Mini.

Long before i owned a Nokia 5800, even before it was actually launched, i was crazy over iPhone (This is the blog which I read). The prime reason for this was the touch screen revolution which iPhone brought with itself. But as time progressed and there were more devices launched with touch screens, i figured out some of the major restrictions which iPhone has in terms of technology and feature support.

I being a regular user of nokia phones, owned a nokia N91 and moving on to the new iPhone had the same expectations. On an initial review itself i was disappointed for i needed a dedicated data plan with the operator for operating the iPhone. It did not support the normal gprs that i had earlier. Moreover, i came bundled with few operators and i did not have the option of an unlocked iPhone (at least in India). The camera with the iPhone did not feature a LED flash. Comparing with the Nokia 5800, it did lack a number of stuff like for a battery replacement, i needed to visit a customer care center. The Bluetooth in iPhone did not connect to other brand phones. So sharing data was a big problem when it came to multimedia files. Also, iPhone does not feature a secondary camera which comes in handy in a video call.

Image00152

Comparing other features of Nokia 5800 and iPhone give the iPhone an edge over Nokia 5800 but comparing their prices, it becomes obvious for iPhone to have that edge. iPhone has better memory support and processing power and it also has a superior graphics support. There are separate groups of Nokia lovers and iPhone lovers and both the groups have their own reasons for loving these phones. Nokia is telecom giant and known for making people's phone in all categories. With phones like N900 and N97, it seems that Nokia is all set to leave the iPhone way behind. Only time will tell who wins the race.

Mobile Download Accelerator is a free utility from 1000CHI Software. You can download this utility free of cost from Nokia Ovi Store. Follow this link to download the Mobile Download Accelerator. This application works almost the same way the desktop versions work. You can stop, pause and resume the download any time you want. It integrates with Nokia's mobile browser and starts the download as soon as you click on the downloadable link.

Launches as soon as you click on the download link

This application is essentially useful for users who are on 2G connections and experience frequent failure when downloading files above 1MB. I rate this application as a must have for Nokia 5800. I am able to download big audio and video files without any failure. The application has a nice interface with two different tabs which show you the file downloaded and the files currently getting downloaded. It has an option in its settings which allows you to choose if you wish to download a particular file using the Nokia's inbuilt down-loader or the MobileDownload Accelerator. Every time you click on a downloadable link, there is a prompt that gives you the option for selecting the download client.

Firefox For Mobiles – Coming Soon

Posted by Isaac Wong Saturday, December 19, 2009 0 comments

Meet members of the Mozilla mobile team as they give you a quick tour of the user interface, features and vision of Firefox for mobile. It is about time that we see a client for symbian phones as well. Although the new Opera Mobile Browser does the job pretty well and is way friendly in the S60v5 devices but nevertheless it would be great to see a fully functional Firefox Browser soon. Froga Game

Posted by Isaac Wong 0 comments

Do you love frogs? Nevermind even if you despise them for this fun little game- Froga will change you perception of frogs, and if not that it will atleast entertain you with its puzzles.

Frogs and puzzles? And don’t the leaves look like Pac-Man? Yeah you are right with both the observations, for the first: the puzzles are more like block-2-go or Bulldozer and for that uncanny resemblance to Pac-Man of the leaves, we have no answer. May be we should knock at the doors of interActive (developers of Froga) for an answer, or may be Namco (developers of Pac-man) will! Let’s not bother about copyright infringements here and dwell straight away in to Froga, after the break though. Read more »

CAUTION: Before you read further, please make a back up of your device and make sure you understand that you are doing this at your own risk. We will not be held liable for any type of loss that may occur during the reset process.

nokia_n97_white_05a_lowres-560x407

1. *#7780# – Restore factory settings – resets all the settings to the default. Make sure you back up your data. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345.

2.*#7370# – Reformat your phone (out of the box, though keep in mind that most new nokia phones at least Nseries, Eseries and s60 based phones have UDP – user data preservation, so not ALL data may be lost. Still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)

This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button.

3. Hard reset – hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key for s60v3 based devices. Turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. Once you feel the phone power up you can let go off only the power button while still holding all three buttons.

For Nokia 5800XM – use the following buttons to do a hard reset, /Green/Red/Camera keys pressed all at once on power up. This will only work on 5800’s that have firmware version 20. and up.

For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is Backspace/SpaceBar / Backspace while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen. If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

It’s been a while since we heard from SPB Software, who are like one of the most popular app developers for Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms. Just when we thought their Symbian division had gone dormant, they released their new app- SPB Weather.

Weather forecasts, why would you need weather forecasts on your mobile phone? If you are asking the above question, let me tell you that this info comes in very handy especially if you happen to be someone who travels a lot on work. You don’t want to be wearing the wrong gear as you step out of your home, only to realise how horribly inappropriate your choice was on reaching the destination. Ok, we need weather forecast, but how good is SPB Weather at sourcing this info right into our 5800s? Let’s find out. Read more »

Resco Photoviewer 5.01 beta Released for 5800s

Posted by Isaac Wong Sunday, December 13, 2009 0 comments

Famous for their applications on the Windows Mobile platform, Resco have been pretty active across other platforms as well. One of such applications on the symbian platform is Resco Photoviewer which was first launched way back in 2007, the golden years of Nokia’s dominance in the smartphone segment with the unparalleled success of Nokia N95.

Well Nokia as well as we as consumers have come a long way and so has Resco with their Photoviewer which is now into v5.01 beta. Whats the deal with Resco Photoviewer? Well, it packs in quiet a punch with its kinetic scrolling and true image editing tools, that are presently not offered by the default image browser of our Nokia 5800s. Ok, how do they actually pan out on our 5800s? Let’s find out after the break though. Read more »

Dad's Cab-1Who says being a Dad is all about stress and sacrifices? It can be fun too and thanks to Nokia for bringing out a game based on Ovi Maps in the form of Dad’s Car, parenting is all the more appealing and fun.

Dad’s Cab and Ovi Maps synchronisation and we say parenting is fun with this app. Sounds pretty much confusing for a 5800 game, right? You must be wondering, “what does this game do after all?” Well for the starters its a game/app for Dad’s who often ferry their kids to school in their cars and it makes the drive all the more entertaining with Dads acting as cab drivers and charging the kids for the ferry service. Ofcourse, the kids cannot pay in cash but they can pay via certain good deeds. Sounds interesting, right? If you are a parent, you would probably want to hit the read button to get a glimpse of the screenshots and a brief review. Others might give this a miss for this app is not meant to appeal to teenagers and bachelors. Read more »

In case you were wondering, you would have to read a tome to learn about Michael Jackson, you are in for luck as EyeMags are no strangers to limitations imposed by mobile devices on applications and have packed the bio-graphy in just 9 pages, yeah just 9 pages. The last few days we have been pretty busy catching up with the application updates on our 5800s, needless to say with hundred odd applications that we have on our 5800s, it’s by no means an easy task. However, it gives us great joy to play around with the latest apps and we deem its our duty to keep our readers updated with the latest apps as well.

Opera, probably the best known third party browser on the symbian platform keeps getting better by the day! After releasing the first beta of Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10 in early November, Opera has now released beta 2 of the two browsers, in just under a month. Somebody is losing sleep over enhancing the browsing experience on our 5800s!

In case you are wondering Opera Mini is the java version and Opera Mobile 10 has been coded in C++. Thats for the geeks; in layman terms Mini is a low end version and can be accessed from a much wider spectrum of mobile phones and Mobile is the high end version, accessible only by some smartphones and yeah our 5800 can use both. Theme Review: Maemo Arena for S60 5th Edition

Posted by Isaac Wong Sunday, November 29, 2009 0 comments

No, nobody has ported Maemo 5 to our 5800s (yet!) but symbian theme designer Mandeep and FoneArena have released Maemo Arena, a symbian theme heavily inspired by the UI elements of Maemo 5.

Now only if some hacker would port the Maemo 5 OS to the 5800s, would we get the features like kinetic scrolling and skype integration on our 5800s but till then we have to be happy with this Maemo Arena theme, which we have to confess is as close as symbian UI can ever get to the Maemo UI, that is at the time being. Check out screenshots and a brief review after the break. Read more »

Spotify, one of the better known music streaming services on the mobile platforms has now landed on our 5800s (yeah finally!). The service which has been doing the rounds in the iPhone and Android communities now completes the full circle when it comes to support for different mobile platforms with the newly announced symbian support.

As with their apps on iPhone and Android, the app is available only for premium subscribers of Spotify (£9.99/month). That doesn’t mean others cannot install this app; its just that non-subscribers will not be able to use the app’s streaming services and hence will be stuck at the login page of the app. If you are game to a premium Spotify account, you gotta see the demo video, afterthe break though. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has changed the way we have our mobile experience. Before, it was just making phone calls and text messages. Today, it is about being connected 24/7.

These past few years, Social Networking has bitten the world. Everyone has extended his or her life offline to the world online. From simple websites that aim to connect people, now these web 2.0 worlds make more things happen. From sharing of pictures to video to comments and having online meetings, social networking is here to stay as long as people want to be connected with each other.

There is plenty of software out there for the Nokia 5800 phone. You can check some of them at the Ovi Store. Some may not be in Ovi but have individual websites that sell their software. However, not all applications are essential.

I’m going to share to two essential applications that I recommend for Social Networking.

Facebook App

Facebook has overtaken MySpace and Friendster in leaps and bounds. I have been able to connect with a lot of people from long lost relatives to high school and college friends to celebrities. Facebook has a cool application for the Nokia 5800 phone.

The standards apply. You can type in your status using the application. You can check the news feeds or statuses of your network of friends and comment. What I think would be the coolest feature is to upload a photo from your gallery or an instantly taken photo to your Facebook account. Unfortunately, you cannot create a new photo album using thisapplication. But nevertheless, this beats the mobile version anytime.

Gravity

Twitter has revolutionized the way we communicate. With just 140 characters under your arsenal, people have typed in their location, what they are doing or what is on their mind. This is not just happening via desktop computers but via mobile phones. For the Nokia 5800, the best Twitter application would be Gravity. Gravity has a sleek interface and does more than just read tweets. It can post tweets, comment or respond to tweets and search for new friends to follow.

As a bonus, you can add your Facebook account in Gravity so you can update your status as well. And it also displays the statuses of your Facebook network of friends. How cool is that?

Of course, there are other applications out there depending on your need. If you are a MySpace user, there is an application for that. And so do Photobucket and Flickr.

With the great mobile features of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone, you are given so much freedom to put the application that you believe you need to gain your very own mobile social networking experience

Nokia 5800 works with Macbooks

Nokia 5800 works with Macbooks

Not everyone who owns Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone has a PC. There are some who use a Mac. Of course, it also goes that those who own an iPhone do not necessarily have a Macbook but use a PC.

Apple continues to increase its market share with its newest and slickest desktop (i.e. iMacs) and mobile computers (i.e. macbook and macbook pros) and their very stable Mac OS X operating software. And their presence is rapidly increasing in spite of the hefty price tag that comes with a unit. Nevertheless, their presence should not be denied.

Many Nokia users do have Macbooks. Unfortunately, Nokia has not release a Mac version of their proprietary software called PC Suite, which will enable your PC computer to access your phone, and do all sorts of things such as send text messages, edit your contacts and upload your music.

On a Mac, you can use PC Suite if you either boot up in Windows (Yes. You can run Windows on a Mac) or use a virtual software such as Parallels to run Windows while in a Mac OS X environment.

Even though you do not have a PC Suite running in your Mac, this does not mean you cannot do anything with your Nokia 5800. You can use your Mac with your Nokia 5800 phone.

Connecting to your phone

Though you may not be able to use the USB cable that comes with your Nokia 5800 phone, you can still use the Bluetooth device that is built-in the phone with your Macbook. To me, this is much more beneficial since you do not have to worry about cables or drivers. Bluetooth is pretty much straight forward and can easily connect to any Bluetooth enabled device. Good thing that Mac comes with Bluetooth right off the box.

You can use the built-in Bluetooth device in your Macbook to connect wirelessly to your Nokia 5800 phone. All you need to do is turn on the Bluetooth from your taskbar or from the System Preferences. Also activate your Nokia 5800 phone’s Bluetooth. Make sure you set it to “Discoverable” mode or else your Mac won’t find it.

Then, choose “Set-up Bluetooth device” from your Macbook and follow the wizard. There will be a special selection “Mobile Phone” that you can choose in the selection. Once you are able to detect the phone with your Macbook, then you can begin doing things with it.

For example, you can send files such as photos, notes and pictures to your Nokia 5800 and vice versa. Also, you can pair your Mac to your Nokia 5800 and access either the phone’s memory or the SD card. From here, you can copy files from the phone to your Mac and vice versa. This is perfect to transfer mp3 and movie files to your phone.

Mobile Codes are not anything new but still there is a large Nokia 5800 audience who may not be familiar with it. As per Nokia – “'Mobile codes' are codes in the same way as ordinary barcodes are, but their matrix structure can hold more information. The codes are also mobile in the sense that you can use the camera on your mobile device to scan and decode them.”

What you can do with a Mobile Code?

As per the definition above, a Mobile Code stores much more info than a regular bar code. Hence, you can use it to store your address and other important information. You can even use it as your business card. You can store upto 60 letter text as a mobile code and other links to websites. You can even publish it on your facebook profile, send as an MMS, print on your T-shirt.

mc

Pre-requisites :-

There is nothing much really techie that you need. You just need a web browser to access the Mobile Codes website and the a decoder application installed on your phone which is available freely from a number of publishers. Yes, it comes free.

Visit http://www.i-nigma.mobi on your mobile handset to download the mobilecode reader.

Keep your Nokia 5800 in great shape. Update.

Keep your Nokia 5800 in great shape. Update.

With all the applications installed in your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Phone, it would be natural for you to get so pre-occupied. Sometimes, the developers of these applications roll out updates and bug fixes without even tell you. You would only know either your read it in a blog page just like what you are doing now or you heard it from a tech geek friend.

Your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has a built-in updater that can check the applications that need updating. This feature is called the Applications Update.

This little known feature can easily be forgotten but it does serve its purpose well. This often forgettable feature will make life easier for you with a few simple taps on the screen.

First, you need to find it. The icon is located inside the Applications folder of your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. When you choose it, the application starts refreshing the list of programs that need to be updated. Of course, to do this, your phone needs to be connected to the Internet via WI-FI or via your cellular network over-the-air Internet. Application Update will connect to the individual servers of these programs to check if they have any available updates or not. If there are, then it will all list on the display.

At the left side of the names of the application is a tick box. Check if you want to download the updates or uncheck if you just want it the way it is. When you are done with your selection, you can now start the update.

Now, depending on your applications and Internet connection, the time will vary. Nevertheless, your applications will be updated in no time. Maybe have some coffee or something.

When it is done, it might ask you to restart your phone just so that it can really implement the upgrade. Do this if only asked.

Just to be sure, you can run the Application Update again and check if there are updates left to be downloaded. We suggest you do this every week to check if some programs get a boost or bug fix from the developers.

Check out the previous updates.

Check out the previous updates.

If you want to know the previous updates, this little application has a log. Access it using the View Update History.

Sometimes, it is not just through the built-in Nokia Applications Update application that software updates their programs. Sometimes, when you run an individual application, it checks any updates for you. However, it should not stop you from making sure you have updated programs by checking them using the Applications Update.

We suggest that you make it part of your weekly Nokia 5800 phone diagnostics and check-up. This way, you can keep your phone in tip top shape.

Nokia took over Trolltech ASA in 2008 and renamed it to Qt Development Frameworks. We already know about Java which enables applications to run platform independent. Qt is a similar cross platform software. Nokia is set to target 80 million devices with Nokia Qt 4.6.0. This new framework for Symbian devices will provide better UI designs and applications.

To give the Nokia Symbian users a preview of what Qt is capable of, they have released a demo app for Nokia S60 5th Edition device. You can download the same here. Below is the full and correct instruction from a blogger in Malaysia.

__________________________________________________

It turns out, it is pretty tough considering my lack of expertise when it comes to Symbian OS phones. I spent 3 days experimenting all possibilities to make it work on my phone. Since it took a lot of my time, I’m going to save yours by teaching you.

Before you do anything, Download the file (80 mb ++) and read all the instructions before hand. It’ll help you to visualize the process.

Download file contains

  • GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50040.exe
  • GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe
  • GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe
  • gmapsupp.img (Malaysian Map, with DUKE highway)
  • garmin_kgen.exe
  • 5800_manual.pdf
  • GarminMobile20_GarminMobileXTOwnersManual.pdf

Note: You can skip part 1.

1. Setting up Apparatus, The Nokia 5800

  1. Back up all data using PC Suite (go to Nokia website).
  2. Soft reset by pressing *#7370#. Should take about 2-3 mins and you lose all your data (except on memory card). But don’t worry, you have back up remember?
  3. On your Nokia 5800, go to Application > Location > Positioning > Positioning Methods. Enable “Assisted GPS” and “Integrated GPS” ONLY. This will ensure you don’t get charge using WAP or 3G network for Internet.
  4. Go to Application > Location > GPS Data > Position > Options > Satellite status. This will show the satellite signals you’re receiving. Be sure you are outdoor in an open area. Balcony doesn’t work well, believe me I’ve tried. Once you’ve got AT LEAST 4 satellite signal, go back indoor, you don’t want people to think you’re crazy, waving your phone around.
  5. Now you’re ready for GarminXT.

2. Installing GarminXT on Nokia 5800.

  1. Once you’ve downloaded, unzip the files to someplace accessible preferably on your desktop. If you haven’t, please download it.
  2. Connect your phone via USB and select ‘Mass storage mode’.
  3. From you PC, double click “GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50040.exe” to install and wait.
  4. Double click “GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe” to install. Wait..
  5. Double click “GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe” to install.
  6. Remove USB connection between PC and phone. When prompted ‘Launch GarminXT’ do not click Yes, just Cancel.
  7. From your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Application Manager > Installation files. There should be GarminXT.sis file. Install it.

3. Cracking GarminXT on Nokia 5800.

  1. Tell yourself and say “Yes, I’m a cheapskate”.
  2. Run GarminXT from your phone at Menu > Application > Garmin. It will prompt you with some settings. Choose your preferable.
  3. Select “Use other device” when it prompts you to buy or trial. You will get a screen, “Where To?” and “View map”
  4. In GarminXT, go to Tools > Settings > About. Jot down “Card ID”, you will need it. Exit GarminXT
  5. On your PC, run “garmin_kgen.exe” and enter the “Card ID” from previous steps.
  6. Generate it and you will get a string of codes. Copy the codes to Notepad and save it as “sw.unl”. *Be sure you don’t save it as sw.unl.txt”*
  7. Connect your phone to PC and select “Mass storage mode”.
  8. Copy “sw.unl” to Garmin folder. Usually located at E:/Garmin.
  9. Copy “gmapsupp.img” from downloaded file to Garmin folder. “gmapsupp.img” is the Malaysian map.
  10. Disconnect your phone from PC.

4. Restore your Nokia 5800

  1. Reconnect your phone via PC Suite.
  2. Restore your settings through back up.

5. Setting up GarminXT on Nokia 5800

  1. You don’t need your PC anymore. Shut down and conserve energy.
  2. Run GarminXT on your phone.
  3. Go to Tools > Settings > System > Remote GPS. Change to “Use Attached GPS” by disabling the “Bluetooth GPS”.
  4. Go to Tools > Manage My Data > Map Sets > MapSource. Make sure all maps are enabled.

6. Toying GarminXT on Nokia 5800.

  1. Switch off your fans and lights. Go out.
  2. Run GarminXT, (duh!).
  3. Select “View Map” and wait for a while. The satellite will find you. It took me 5 mins or so. Just have patience and faith.
  4. Now you’ll see where you are.
  5. Go back and select “Where To?”. If you’re at home and wants GarminXT to store you current location as home, then select “Home”
  6. “Where To?” is rather confusing. I usually use “Where To?” > Point of interest. There’s lots of shopping malls, hospitals, banks, ATM machines etc. from there, you’d know where to go.
  7. Pat yourself and say “Well done”. The rest is up to you.

Note: I will NOT be providing support. If it doesn’t work for you, you can leave a comment and hope someone will rescue you. Google it!

Pico Fart: Make Your 5800s FART!

Posted by Isaac Wong Sunday, November 22, 2009 0 comments

Probably the name along with the title, let it away but just in case you have any second thoughts, let us deal with them straight away: Pico Fart makes your 5800s fart and no kidding, it’s as real as any human’s flatulence, only sans the stench though!

You may probably overlook this app is just another fart app in the ovi store, but we should tell you that this one is for real, atleast when it comes to fart! These are the kind of apps, that push the iPhone app tally to well pas that fancy 100k mark, but hey look iPhoners our 5800ers has a share of fart apps of its own too! Enough of iPhone bashing, let’s get back to Pico Fart on 5800, after the break though. Read more »

Improvements?

Improvements?

Don’t get me wrong. I love my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. It took me five years to upgrade my phone simply because I have not found a phone suitable for my requirements. That is, until I saw theNokia 5800 on a blog post. I read it and it was quite unbelievable.

But just like any product, there are good things and shortcomings.

So we have developed a wish list of features that could still be part of an upcoming firmware update (fingers crossed) not only forNokia 5800 but also for other Nokia Phones. Here are some of the major cravings that I want to have in my Nokia 5800 phone.

Kinetic Scrolling

When Apple introduced the iPhone, the phone industry went crazy. When they debut this new piece of technology, we all salivated when we saw Steve Jobs swiped the touch screen and the display scrolled up with such fluid motion. I still remember the people cheering with astonishment. Folks, we have been introduced to the kinetic scrolling.

Kinetic scrolling is a phone feature where you flick the screen in the direction of choice and it will scroll continuously in a fluid motion. Image the “Price is Right” roulette moving up or down. Traditionally, we need to either press an “Up” or “Down” key and move one section at a time. Quite time consuming. Kinetic scrolling helps making things faster as you access your contacts or messages.

The Nokia 5800 has a touch screen similar to the iPhone. But it still uses the traditional section scrolling. Phone owners are hoping this will be part of a major upgrade soon. Why the folks in Nokia cannot include this in the update is still a mystery since they have been able to do it in the upcoming Nokia N900 phone.

Improved Camera

When I found out that this unit has a 3.2 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, I said that it would be a great camera phone. This is the same lens used in video cameras. However, I was deeply disappointed at the picture quality of the Nokia 5800 phone. It was grainy and had problems in dim places. The photos have so much noise that it would be a sin to take them. The flash does help but not much. You can still see the imperfections.

Now, I do not know if a firmware upgrade will address this concern. Mostly, this is a hardware issue. Yet Nokia should also do something about it. Improve the camera software or tweak something inside that can influence better looking pictures.

Memory

Now, 81MB is not enough to run a lot of applications. Of course, a firmware update will not make the hardware memory increase in capacity. But could a firmware upgrade help in juggling the memory needs of the Nokia 5800 applications?

These are just some improvements I want to see in my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. With the highly anticipated debut of the Nokia N900, there is so much buzz on how it has improved hardware wise. But don’t leave the Nokia 5800 behind. It still has plenty to offer to those who bought the unit. I will also need to select from mobile phone deals a new one as mine is just finishing.

MMMOOOSlideShowAre still find is there screensaver on the Nokia 5800? Screensaver is such a nice function for phone, but how pitty 5800 not include this. However our dedicated app reviewing partner, MMMOOO, the developer of the rocketing MyPhone-turn Nokia phones into iPhone, provides a very special .sis installer file which called Slide Show, actually i former know this function under theme section, but when my real life photos goes in the the homescreen with S60 frame ui, the background is so ugly.

How to set Slide Show on 5800However, this slide show is very unique, it meet seamlessly well with my 5800 as you can see from the photo above. Each motto word will slideshow according to your own setting in homescreen. It hints people keep in wisdom and holly, really impressive!

How t o apply slide show? Actually, you can use any photos of yours to apply in slideshow, but normally the photos will be display well on the homescreen just as i mentioned above. However you can ps your photos :) to achieve a nice fit. And MMMOOO 9 Fruits slide just is a good case. They even done this in .sis installer, not messed .jpg images, very convenient for your installation. The method from 9 Fruits:

  • Choose the right resolution file to install
  • Go: Setting-General-Personalisation-Theme-Wallpaper-Slide Show choose '9Fruits' related images

Maybe it slipped passed you but Nokia just recently updated the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic’s firmware to version 31.0.101. This has been a long time coming since it’s last firmware update dated July 2009.

Currently only available in Europe and Asia, this newest firmware update has included updates on your phone including an advanced e-mail application, a better version of Ovi Maps 3.0, an easier navigation experience, and bug fixes.

Frankly, there aren’t much graphical changes on this update unlike the previous update. It is claimed that there are bug fixes done which should always be part of any firmware update. Now to which bug fixes were resolved, Nokia did not specify it.

Also, it was mentioned that there is a more advanced e-mail application and Ovi Maps 3.0. Upon checking Ovi Maps, the interface does look cleaner and has great looking icons.

Update your Nokia 5800 XM firmware

Update your Nokia 5800 XM firmware

This is not the update everyone is waiting for. For months, Nokia 5800 users have been teased with the kinetic scrolling found in other Nokia units, which should have been part of the normal features of the Nokia 5800. Until now, we have not seen any trace of this kind on the updates.

Another feature we are waiting for is the appearance of widgets on the Nokia 5800’s main display, which is similar to the upcoming Nokia N900 phone due November 2009. What these widgets will do is similar to desktop widgets in Windows or Mac OS X. They will display different information such as time, dates and RSS feeds. However, with the 81MB internal memory of the Nokia 5800, this may be hard to pull. Having widgets present will eat up memory space and will affect the performance of your phone.

We are still in a wait and see mode. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Nokia didn’t forget one of their most sought after devices.

Be the smart and brave snow leopard on the backgroundHave you ever played a game called Bulls and Cow, a classical number deduction game? This game was really hard to me in my childhood. :-( And later there was a board game called Mastermind which replace the number with color ball. It's also very hot when I was young. Now you can be the hero, in your brain storm or kill time as the smart & brave snow leopard in the background.

MMMOOO brings this game to your mobile phone! It's called Memo Deduction. You have to figure out what color each memo is with the hint of pin.

Game logic:

Deductive out the all the memos' color according to the hints; Click each memo to select a color or leave blanks, click done; Red pushpin numbers means the 'color & position are both right' numbers, the black means the 'color is right but position is wrong' ones.

3 levels:

  • Easy: 4 memos, 4 colors, 12 chances
  • Normal: 5 memos, 5 colors, 10 chances
  • Difficult: 5 memos, 6 colors, 8 chances
memodeduction3pres

the 3rd level is really hard to figure out!

The game now is on commercial mode as MMMOOO's regular method, and cost 2.99 usd, not too expensive or cheap, but it's really a playable mini game. You can buy it with our trusted link here. We will also hold a contest days later, kindly keep an eye on our blog :)

Seems like Nokia realised that many users are not clear on the direction and the app availability for email, social network and messaging on Nokia devices.

That’s why the company launches a new portal that features all the messaging options and ambitions.

The portal is divided into 3 main sections: Email, Instant Messaging and Social Networking.

Each section tells users what they can do on their phone in messaging and how it helps them to communicate better.

Once the user has selected the device, the graphic changes to match messaging options for the selected model.

Here’s a video overview of Nokia Messaging.

Check out the new Messaging site now!

If you are looking for the game for exercising your quick thinking and finger skill, so this game is for you. Zum Zum is developed by innerActive for Nokia 5800 XM.

The game will display the Egypt ancient city with the pyramid and pharaoh. A game board will be shown along with the carved pathway. One of the holes will release multi colored balls that move to the other hole at the path end. You need to shoot those multiple color balls in order to form the 3 balls with same color. Those similar color balls then will disappear and it will help you to maintain the game. If your balls are stacked up, the game will over.

The up and down arrows at the left side will guide you shooter. Just press the target like icon when you are ready to shoot. To check out what color you will shoot, just see the lower right screen.

Continuing on their efforts of synchronising all their symbian services under the Ovi hood, Nokia have rechristened their Nokia Music application to Nokia Ovi Player.

The latest update to the Nokia Music application, brings the new name along with several other improvements over the previous application. We gotta admit, there is nothing new in the Ovi player to get us all excited about but just the Ovi branding now gives the application a new identity and blends well with the Ovi suite, which was made public recently.
